What is the earliest age you moved a child from cot to bed?

And did it work out or not?

DD (16 months) naps in her bed but goes in her cot at night. She asks for her bed though and I have to say no because I am scared she will just get up in the night and wander round the house.

dd was 16 mo when she went into a bed. It was because we needed the cot for dd2 ! She was fine though, we had a side up, and she didn't seem to realise she could actually get out for quite some time. She just used to call us in the morning to come and get her ! AS long as you have stairgates up for safety, it should be ok.

stuffitllama · 13/02/2008 20:45

17 months. It was fine as we had a stairgate either at the top of the stairs or at the room door, can't remember. Either way we could hear him, and he didn't wake up that much anyway.

Elkat · 13/02/2008 20:47

My DD went into her bed at 13 months. She did try the getting up and wandering round lark - but a few Nos soon taught her where she should be staying! She is now almost 15 months, and understands that she has got to stay in bed at night.

We put dd1 in her bed at 16 months as well and it was fine for us - she was waking up in the early mornings (disrupting my sleep!) so I though if she could get out of bed and find us...climb into bed with us it would be much better, and it worked a treat. We had a stairgate on, there was nowhere else she could have gone except our room.

dd3 is the same age now and I couldn't imagine moving her to a bed right now! She's a fab sleeper though and gives me a good night's sleep lol

Volkl · 13/02/2008 20:48

my DS was 19mo - we should have done it earlier as he found his way out by launching himself head first over the cot sides!

He is now 22mo and we have a stair gate at the top of the stairs, bathroom door shut, dim light on the landing and if he ever gets up, its always just to either my or DH's side of the bed.

soph28 · 13/02/2008 20:49

my niece was 16mths and she was fine but she is an EXCEPTIONAL sleeper. She still has a sleeping bag in her bed and a duvet and I don't think she's ever climbed out of the bed on her own- she just waits for someone to come in!

DS went in at 2 and dd is 18mo and NO WAY is she ready for a bed, She would definitely get up in the night, although am tempted cos then her and ds could play in their room in the morning and I might get some more sleep!!!

ChorusLine · 13/02/2008 20:50

sorry to post a negative! I put ds in at 22 months but was not ready at all, i put him back in cot at 24 months and still there at 27 months

MesaLoca · 13/02/2008 20:55

Ooh wow, I really thought I was going to be told that 16 months is far too young! My main concern is not that her wandering around would cause her to fall as we have a stair gate but I worry she would decide to do it every night and that if we decided to put her back in her cot she would get really upset and refuse to sleep. She will never sleep in her cot during the day, only her bed so i suspect that once she goes in her bed at night there is no going back.

You all seem to have had positive experiences though!

Dd went in at 18 months, mainly because of a move and bedroom changes and it was fine.

Ds moved into a bed at 14 months. He was such a wriggler, he just kept turning sideways in the cot, waking himself up... so put him in bed, still in sleeping bag thingy, with a bed rail, and never had a problem, just nice sleep as he could sleep sideways and not whack his head on any bars.

chankins · 13/02/2008 20:59

o and dd2 went in at 20 mo, because she had worked out how to throw herself out of cot. She was a pain compared to dd1 though, got out and came downstairs straight away, but consistently putting her back in without talking to her soon did the trick ! Sounds like your lo has made up her own mind !

ArmadilloDaMan · 13/02/2008 21:03

In my friends/family usual age is around 10-11 months.

It wasn't till I came on here I realised that would be considered early.

seeker · 13/02/2008 21:04

Mine went straight from moses basket to futon - bypassing a cot altogether.

Anna8888 · 13/02/2008 21:04

My daughter has never slept in a cot. She always slept in my bed or in a bed in my room right from the outset, with one of those little walls that fits under the mattress to stop her rolling off the bed.

We live in a flat, so no issues about wandering around - though she has never done this.

SappyLamour · 13/02/2008 21:08

i moved ds1 at 12m

ds2 didnt move till he was 15m (v late i thought!)

ds3 was... um... 18m-ish owing to living circs not giving room for own bed.

i think cots are little prisons tho - understand safety angle when v small... . if i had my way tho (which i ddint as it goes, dp objected on grounds of 'draughts' [scowl]) theyd have been on a mattress on the floor from birth and never had one at all.

ArmadilloDaMan · 13/02/2008 21:09

seeker - how did yours get on with futon?

I'm not a big fan of cots for many reasons and always thought if I have another child I wouldn't use one if poss.

Just wondering about logistics.

We put ds on mattress on floor at 10 months and he was fine on that.

Hulababy · 13/02/2008 21:11

DD was 18 months and she was fine. Should have done it earlier as she hated being in a cot, so ended up n our bed way too often before that.

SappyLamour · 13/02/2008 21:11

actually, if i had my way really, wed have one whole room fitted out with mattresses and we'd all sleep together in a big family bed with a bunch of covers/duvets to choose from or share as the fancy takes us...

am such a hippy at heart.

SappyLamour · 13/02/2008 21:12

ds2 HATED his cot witha vengeance.

wish id had courage of my convictions to get rid sooner.

youi live and learn.

Nemoandthefishes · 13/02/2008 21:20

ds was 13mths dd1 12mths and dd2 12mths. All hated cot. DS tried to vault sides.
DD1 tried to climb out but also needed cot for dd2. DD2 was fine in cot but I found it easy moving the other 2 at that age. DD2 is 13mths and not had any probs with the move bar the 3rd night where she thought it was funny to run to the door knock shout and run back again.

pagwatch · 13/02/2008 21:22

We moved when DD was 18 months. Disposed of cot from old house and bought bed for new.
No problems at all.

llareggub · 13/02/2008 21:25

My son is nearly 16 months old and I hadn't really thought of moving him until now. Food for thought indeed.

Loshad · 13/02/2008 21:31

moved ds1 when he was 17 months old - needed the cot. He loved his bed - bounced on it, off it, ran round on it, never blo*min slept in it, and started a three year cycle of us having to sit and hold his hand till he went to sleep - usually long after me
never bothered putting ds3 or 4 in a cot really except for daytime sleeps where the dog might sleep on them or something, ds3 was and is great at going to bed, ds4 was dreadful and is (at 7) still pretty awful.

gigglewitch · 13/02/2008 21:36

20 months, DD moved to a toddler bed. the others moved at 2nd birthday, and 21 months.

ernest · 13/02/2008 21:49

all 3 of mine between 12 & 16 months. no problems at all with nocturnal wanderings or anything else from any of them.

go for it

seeker · 13/02/2008 22:09

Armadillo - it was brilliant - but we didn't mind them coming into bed with us whenever they wanted. Wouldn't work for people who want their children to stay put! It meant one of us could lie down next to them if necessary and be comfortable. We didnt use the bed bit, just the futon mattress and so they only had a few inches to fall if they rolled out of bed. Would hratily recommend.
