Tantrums

Hi

How does every one else manage toddler tantrums! My little one is two and a half. He is so much harder work than my older two children.

If he doesn't get his own way, he throws things and hits and pinches. He constantly says no Aswell. His eating is a nightmare but he will eat snacks no problem.

I do wonder if it is just his age or if there is an element of adhd. I mentioned it at his 2 year check but they didn't seem overly concerned

I was just coming on to ask the same.

I try and ignore him when he's throwing toys so not to give a reaction.

What I find really hard to deal with is when mine hurts his younger brother (1.5yrs) and when he proper throws himself around and screams and hits out when I try and change him. Tonight he ended up biting his lip during the struggle and I slapped his leg which I'm really upset with myself about but I just can't get through to him sometimes.

@trampoline123

I feel your pain. It's so hard to deal with at times!

@Samk79 If you are noticing a clear difference with your other DC I wouldn't let the HV ignore you, our did the same and it's taken years to get any support.

I'd call her today and ask her to do the Ages & Stages questionnaire and refer him for a hearing test. How's his speech and understanding?

@trampoline123 I'd do the same as above, including the SLT questionnaire but I'd also get yourself a copy of Little Angels by Dr Tanya Byron. It's out of print now but there are copies out theree*. Usually if they are frustrated it either tiredness, lack of speech in that they can get frustrated or lack of rountine. Have you noticed any triggers for the bad behaviour, like it's worse if he needs a nap?

trampoline123 · 28/03/2023 08:53

Thank you! Yes, it's definitely because he's overtired. He's refusing his day naps, he will sometimes go down but generally won't.

It's 100% related to that.

@PritiPatelsMaker the hv did the questionnaire at his 2 year check. His speech and understanding is very good and I don't think there are any problems with his hearing
