MORE AND MORE WORRIED TODDLER NOT EATING

My little boy is 2 and 5 months has always been fussy with food, but lately he has got worse. He has never like meat, cheese or eggs, so that is one problem in itself, but lately he is eating less and less at mealtimes, like tonight we got him involved and he made his own pizza, he ate the first piece no problem but then whenever he had another bite he didn't like it!!! I am sitting here crying now because I am at my wits end, and so worried about my little one, I have tried everything. He lost a lot of weight when he was getting his back teeth but that was last year now, since then he's not lost anymore weight, but he hasn't gained any weight either. I just don't know what to do anymore!

this website has some good ideas to try
here
its really hard when they're so picky. Just keep offering them lots of things when you eat and they do eventually eat some.

As long as he is not losign weight/constantly exhausted/fainting then he will be ok.

They need the equivilant of a boiled egg per day to keep them healthy enough (not just surviving but that they are fine).

It is worrying but your stress will make him worse.

I have been through this and survived. It was hard but mine was/is fine.

Just keep offering him food at mealtimes and have 2-3 snack times during the day.

Don't make a fuss over food. Don't beg/cajole him to eat. LEave him to it and praise if he does eat.

It is not unusual for their weight to level off for a while at this age.

Please try not to worry about this too much, easy for me to say i know, when you are the one dealing with it.

No child will EVER starve themselves. Trust me on that. Does he drink plenty of milk? Do you give him multivitamins to boost him?

loopyredangel · 11/02/2008 21:29

Thank you for the support, he is a little monkey, he never seems to have room to eat his meals but plenty of room for sweet things, which of course we don't give in!

How does he do with fruit and veg?

Nemoandthefishes · 11/02/2008 21:40

is there anything he will eat?

My ds was a horrendous eater and is thin, from 12mths old he didnt put any weight on until the last 6mths and he is 4.4yrs. Now he weighs around 32lbs and eats fairly well.
DD1 is just following the same pattern at 2.1yrs so I try to offer her one thing I know she will eat with a meal whether it is sweetcorn, chips or mash then I know she will eat something there. I think half of it is being a bit nonchalant about it where if you get worked up they know it. We also do a lot of praise for other people at the table eg..wow look ds just took a bite of pizza isnt he clever then cheer and clap..dd1 wants a piece of the action so will copy ds.

That link was great ecmo, feel much better for reading that! We have just started him on multivitamins again, and have started giving him a little extra milk.

He loves fruit and some vegetables, and yoghurt, cereal, pasta, vegetable rice, I've been doing a diary of what he eats this week, but the days are virtually the same! Does that matter?
