DS overcoming physical trauma, how do we go about this?

DS is 6 years old. In October he had an accident when out with his grandparents. This resulted in his finger being crushed between a door hinge, causing a necessary next day operation to stitch everything back together (he was under general). Finger was able to be unwrapped and was deemed as healed by the hospital in December.

However, DS will still not use his finger for anything. Won't wear a glove on this hand, won't run it underwater (I have to clean it for him), walks around with his hand in a protected position. He has said it doesn't hurt anymore, but the pain and what it was previously like gets stuck in his head. He is also traumatised at what it looked like at the time, and will talk about this all the time.

I worry that his finger will get stiff and sore if he's not using it.

Any ideas how we can overcome this mental trauma? (doctors have confirmed it's healed and DS is adamant it doesn't hurt. He will clench his fist and move his fingers when I ask).
