15 month review worries

Hi, my DS is 14 months and I'm worried about his upcoming 15 month review. From baby groups I know he is so far behind others but I'm worried it's my fault or my own doing
For context he cannot stand unaided, cruises on furniture but no interest in actually walking, can only babble one word, doesn't hold a bottle, doesn't wave or point, doesn't recognise many words and only has one tooth.
Is this a huge development delay?

Personally I don't think that not walking at 14 months is a concern, especially if he's cruising on furniture.

If he's only using one word, I'd contact the HV before the check up to request a hearing test. Things like glue ear can affect speech.

I'd also do this progress checker from Speech & Language UK. If there are any concerns it will give advice on how to find support.

Thank you for your reply I found the linked source really useful. I don't think his hearing is so much the issue as he turns to sounds and crawls to the sound source but it's just speech is so far behind.
I'm going to phone HV on Monday and ask for any further help or suggestions!
I'm walking around the house and super market waving bye bye to everything and it's made 0 different but instead made me look loopyGrin

If he is referred for SLT they will want him to have had a hearing test before he starts though. Both of mine have had SLT and both passed their hearing tests before starting Wink

This is exactly the same as my 14 month old DS, I have his review in a few weeks and am also a bit worried…. he cruises, claps when asked, plays peekaboo and babbles lots. But no words yet, not pointing, waving or mimicking actions (like talking on the phone or brushing hair).
Let me know how you get on with the HV.

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/02/2023 10:01

Have you done the progress checker I posted @pinkypjs? Just wondered what it had said?

pinkypjs · 04/02/2023 10:41

@PritiPatelsMaker it says ”You answered "no" to some important questions about your baby's communication development” 😕

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/02/2023 12:49

Ok so if thats the case I think you do need to speak to your HV and ask for a hearing test and a referral to SLT.

Don't be fobbed off and told to wait, like they did with us.

The organisation that does the progress checks also have a helpline if you want to get some information from them before speaking to your HV?

My 17 mo has just been referred to speech and language. She doesn’t say any words or copy any sounds. She babbles a lot and has very good understanding - but apparently she just hit the criteria for referral. She has also been referred to audiology to check it’s not a hearing issue first (I don’t think it is). There’s an 11 month wait for SLT in my area so not expecting to hear anything for a while.

That's shocking @EdemaRuh. They are just relying on the parents who can afford to pay fir done privately to do so.

I'd keep pushing for the hearing test, it could just be glue ear.

Did your HV do an ASQ test with your DD?

EdemaRuh · 11/02/2023 08:42

She did, yes. She’s slow on her gross motor skills too (not yet walking independently) but physio won’t accept a referral till she’s 20months.

She’s fine in all her other areas, just gross motor and language. She also did the ASQ social-emotional questionnaire and that was fine too.

8 month wait for audiology!

8 month wait for audiology

That's shocking too.

If she does have glue ear, it's free to join the NDCS. They are usually a good source of information and support too Wink
