Delayed walking

Hi, I’m looking to see if any others have been through similar experiences on isolated gross motor delays and have anything to share on this.

I have twin girls who are 28 months old now. They were born two months prematurely. They’re measuring normally on cognitive skills, fine motor, speech, emotional/behavioural etc. however they have always been delayed on gross motor.

M started crawling just before she turned a year old and A started crawling when she was 14 months old (12 months actual). They’ve been proficient crawlers since then and it is still their most used way of getting around. We have been under the care of a paediatrician and physio since they were 18 months old. At 18 months, they pulled up to stand.

Since then they have been cruising and will walk if we hold their hand or if they’re using a pram/Walker. Both have now at 28 months taken some independent steps (A on several days, M just one time about 5 steps). But the steps are few and far between and crawling remains their main mode of moving around. The paediatrician has ordered some blood tests but keeps telling us that whilst they’re in the minority, they will get there. He’s reluctant to order MRIs at this stage.

Im at a loss as to what to do. I lie awake at night wondering if they will ever walk and run around. Any advice or experiences? Thank you

My little boy is 20 months corrected (born 7 weeks early) and also not walking yet! Cruising, walking holding my hands and took a few steps just last week but nothing since. I feel for you because I’m a ball of anxiety too even though he’s making progress. Have you seen a physio OP? We have been and its really helped me (and my little boy!)

Apologies, seen you’ve been to physio already! I think they will walk as they’re doing all the right pre walking skills but the waiting is very hard

Has the Paediatrician said what the blood tests are for @SEtwins?

@AfterGlow87 im pleased it is going well with your physio. We really like ours too, she’s amazing. It’s nice because she points out to us the little extra things the girls are doing each time she sees them. It’s hard as parents to see those little signs of progress. All I want is to see them walk and run around, and to go out and have fun with them. I hope the day comes for you very soon 🙂

@PritiPatelsMaker i was kicking myself today for not asking but I did ask the physio and she said it’s typically for checking chromosomal abnormalities etc that may not otherwise be obvious. Does your LO have delayed walking too?

No but my DSis did. I think by that age they are so quick at crawling that they can't perhaps see the point of walking? Wink
