Six year olds development

Tell me about your six year olds(year 2) What are their self care and physical skills like?
I’ve had various concerns about my dd for a while now but not sure if my concerns are valid or it’s normal development.
Here are a few of my concerns
with dressing she can’t do/ undo buttons except for very large ones and even then she looks really awkward when doing them.
Can’t do zips.
Often puts her shoes on the wrong feet and doesn’t mention them being uncomfortable or anything.
doesn’t brush her own teeth very well and still can’t spit out the toothpaste.
doesn’t wipe herself after using the toilet.
can’t blow her nose.
tries to use a knife and fork but very awkward, she’s a messy eater.
can’t pedal a bike even with stabilisers
can catch a ball but doesn’t move to catch it, only catches if it’s right at her.

Some of what you type does sound like issues with you daughters motorskills.

My children are 7 and 5 so either side of yours;

My seven year old:
Can dress but has trouble with zips.
Puts his own shoes on but gets them on the wrong feet. He can't do laces.
He can do his own socks If they are lose fitting he can't get them on if they are tight.

Can wipe his own bum

Has just started washing his own hair. Making him fully independent in the bathroom.
He can brush his teeth but needs prompting.
He can use a fork fine but sometimes cuts lazy / annoyed at cutting.
Can use scissors, cuts well, rides a bike fine. Stopped bedwetting at 4 but still has a dummy to get to sleep.

My 5 year old;
Can dress but needs help with his zips and buttons.
Puts shoes on "eventually" with a lot of promoting.
Does velcro, he can do socks better than the 7 year old.
"Helps" brush his own teeth but needs an adult to do it after.
Rides a bike without stabilisers.
Needs me to hold the paper to blow his nose. Can a balloon but not a ball (it may help you to start with a balloon with your daughter).
Needs lots of help bathing.
Needs help wiping well.
I cut food for him.
Still in night nappies.

I hope this is some help.

Thank you, that’s great. Helpful to know what other children her age are able to do. I’ve asked to speak to the teacher at school to discuss development but wanted to know if my expectations were to high first.

I think it points to some delay with motorskills. And it never hurts to ask the school what they think.
It may just be that she's a child who needs extra practice in these areas. She sounds very willing to try which is great.

Just bumping to see if anybody else has any feedback?

my 6.5 year old can:

Skips across a room

Walks on a beam without falling

Hops on one foot

Can use a skipping rope

Rides a bicycle with stabilizers

Can catch a small ball

Cuts out shapes when following an outline

wipes herself after using the toilet

Colors within lines

Can fully dress herself, but can't tie her own shoes yet

6.5 year-old:

Can brush her teeth and spit out toothpaste.
Dress herself completely (although outfits are interesting 😂)
Can usually do zips but sometimes needs help starting off.
Is independent in the bathroom.
Can run, hop, skip etc and rides a bike without stabilisers.
Has neater handwriting than my 10 year old 😂

She's still in pull-ups at night though,
I'm still washing and brushing her hair,
Can't tie laces yet,
Catching a ball is hit and miss,
Goes to dance lessons but often struggles to follow the steps.

Hi, my little girl just turned 7 last month but at 6 she could get herself dressed, do her buttons/zips, brush her own teeth and wash her own hair, get in/out of the bath without help. At around 6.5 I decided she was old enough to wipe after the toilet, she picked it up pretty quick. She still cannot ride a bike, even with stabilisers or a scooter.

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone, the feedback has been really helpful.

My just turned 7 year old has been doing the following for a while:

Hop, Skip and Jump
Use a skipping rope
Catch a large object most of the time
Can dress, do some buttons and zips. can put his socks and shoes on (velcro)
he can use a scooter but not peddle a bike.
he can brush his own hair.
he can blow his own nose

I still do the following for him:
Wipe his bottom
Bath and wash his hair
Brush his hair
Brush his teeth (I make him give them a go after)
Cut up food (but I make him try)

He hasn't wet the bed in a long long time.
He finds scissors very frustrating and gives up after attempting to cut anything, but he can sort of do it.

freespirit333 · 17/01/2023 21:22

DS is Y2, age 7.

Can dress himself and buttons and zips are ok.
Never spits toothpaste out whilst brushing teeth so maybe he can’t.
Can’t blow nose.
Can clean self ok after the toilet but has continence issues. He’s independent though and got in a mess in school once and sorted himself out very sensibly.
Can ride a 2 wheeled bike and scooter (and has been able to do since 4.5 and 5 respectively)
Can use a knife and fork messily though and needs reminding how to use the knife.
Handwriting very messy.
Poor ball skills, catching and kicking.
Still doesn’t always colour between the lines.
Dry at night, has been for several years.

One thought is that if she is struggling to pedal her bike with stabilisers, then a larger balance bike might be a good idea? They're much easier to use.

This is a good idea, you wouldn't even need to buy a new bike, just take the peddles off the one she already has.

Pasta4tea · 18/01/2023 16:26

Even better idea!!

Blainesmaries · 03/02/2023 20:44

My just turned 7 year old can;
Dress herself fully. Use scissors correctly. Hop on one leg well. Cut her own food. Ride a bike without training wheels. She has been wiping herself after peeing since she started school but I'm still doing it after poo. She still bed wets. She can skip. She can't do shoe laces yet. I do her hair washing and she has started toothbrushing and bathing herself. She can blow her nose herself.

barefootbearfoot · 17/02/2024 10:42

My 6 year old can;

Dress himself, with prompting
Do shoes and socks
Can tie laces but it takes an age
Hop on one leg
Ride a two wheel bike
Can cut his own food, but doesn't
Brushes his teeth, but I check and "help"
Brush his hair but I check and help.

He still bedwets most nights
I still wipe him after a poo
I still wash his hair, but he dries himself after a shower
He doesn't like scissors

I hope that helps.
