Can anyone help me here? Josh is 26 months, and is constantly on the go anyway, but the last 2 days, he has been beyond a joke...anything he should not touch, and I mean anything too....he touches, he then has a row, and off he goes and does it again. I had thought maybe he has eaten something different to normal, and all i can think of is his juice. He normally has orange, lemon and pineapple, but I bought robinsons summer fruits the other day, and since he has been naughty, thats what he has been drinking. I had thought maybe it was blackcurrant making him Hyper, but there is no b/currant in it! I just wondered if anyone else had a problem like this....help!! ( and YES..before anyone asks me I have changed his juice already!!)Will keep you informed on how we go ( thats if I am not locked up in a secure unit by then!!!)

What is he touching??? Is it possible to babyproof rooms (remove precious objects/breakables/plug socket covers installed etc) then ignore him when he is doing something you don't like and give him lots of praise and attention when he's playing nicely? And take him to the park if he's hyper. I suspect it's just a stage and is to do with attention seeking - ie touching something gets LOTS of mummy attention even if it is of the shouty variety.

Demented · 12/11/2002 22:14

My DS1 did this I would say it is just a phase but a pretty irritating one. He would just make his way round the room touching whatever he was not allowed to and looking to see the reaction. He had a particular facination with buttons and switches so the biggest problem was in the kitchen where he just made his way from one appliance to the other, we put a lock on the kitchen door and that helped and trying to ignore the bad behaviour and distracting him with other things which was often a trip out the house. No other suggestions really except to echo what aloha has said about babyproofing things. All the best, I remember it well!

I have the same thing with my 3 year old if he has more than a couple of ribenas. I had a friend who had to ration fresh orange juice for her child, apparently there is a lot of caffiene in it.

aloha · 13/11/2002 13:29

There isn't a caffeine in orange juice. Natural sugar yes, but no caffeine. Some artificial colours have recently been linked to hyperactivity and tantrums though.

Bumblelion · 13/11/2002 14:09

I agree with what Aloha says. Not saying this is the problem, but some/all children crave attention and they would rather have "negative" attention (being told off) than no attention at all. It could be something he has eaten though - my friend's son is not allowed any sweets, they really do turn him into the child from hell. The change in him is so sudden and full-on but cutting out the sweets has made a huge amount of difference (Haribo seem to have been the worst).

bundle · 13/11/2002 14:15

God, Bumblelion I've just eaten almost a whole packet of Haribo cola bottles. I'm feeling surprisingly mellow

SueW, I have to buy them surreptitiously at the corner shop on the way to the tube - cannot be seen putting them into shopping trolley by dd or she'd snitch on me - and want half the bag

Demented · 13/11/2002 19:39

Maybe I just have the child from hell (after the day I've had with him today I think so). At this age he barely had any sweets and the only juice he had was watered down pure apple juice. If he ever did have sweets there was no difference in his behaviour, except the day when he stole a whole packet of Jaffa Cakes and hid behind the chair and ate them all, he was bouncing off the walls that day. With my DS it seems to be an unfortunate personality trait and he has moved on from touching everything and found new heights of naughtiness.

Can anyone tell I have had a bad day?

Aaaaargh, I've never done that before.

MummytoJosh, if you get as far as the secure unit can you see if they have space for me. Thanks.

jasper · 13/11/2002 23:46

No Demented, I have the child from hell....

ScummyMummy · 13/11/2002 23:47

no no- the children from hell are all mine!

jasper · 14/11/2002 00:50

Scummy are we related?

SoupDragon · 14/11/2002 07:56

Some of the children from hell belong to me. I assume that goblins actually stole my lovely well behaved boys and left me with changelings. The ones I have here can't possibly be mine.

mollipops · 14/11/2002 09:13

MummytoJosh, has it got passionfruit juice in it?

Bozza · 14/11/2002 10:20

Mummyto josh let us know what you find now you've stopped the juice. I've found that bought birthday cakes/icing send my DS loopy but not really anything else.

Hi everyone, Well, I stopped the juice and it has worked, only a little but he is def. not as bad as he was on the other juice. It has starwberry, apple, cherry and blueberry in it..some people asked what was in the 'old' juice.
So up to now, it seems as if he is calming down, though i may have another problem also..I think, and only think this ok, that when he has white chocolate buttons they ''send him off on one'..he gets a bit uperty all day and was wondering if anyone else had noticed this? Also, I was told to not let him have any E numbers..what exatcly are E numbers in?Was told he would be a different child if he had no E numbers. Has anyone else done this? And if so what was the outcome?
Thanks in advance again!

Not really found it with the white choccie buttons mummytojosh but like I said the cake icing did it. Also once a piece of cheesecake (following a rather too large portion of crumble and custard) had a similar effect. This was my MIL. Put the cheesecake on the table before serving the crumble and custard. So DS went mad for both. My Mum did something similar and DS ended up having two jaffa cakes and a chocolate roll but we got away with that one - ie no upleasant side effects.

My solution is simple - don't keep chocolate in the house but send DH to the petrolstation after DS has gone to bed if I'm desperate!

WideWebWitch · 19/11/2002 17:29

mummytojosh e numbers are in lots of things, but especially sweets. If I ever let ds have coke (rarely) he is like a child possessed, with the most INCREDIBLE energy, often followed by bad behaviour. So in that case it's probably caffeine and sugar. I'll see if I can find a web guide for you and will post a link if I can. Definitely worth trying to cut down on sugar and e numbers to see what happens (sorry if I'm repeating someone, haven't read the whole thread).

WideWebWitch · 19/11/2002 17:38

Can't get this link to work (anyone know why, it always happens with The Guardian?) but there's an article at this address, copy and paste it , might work.
society.guardian.co.uk/publichealth/story/0,11098,818869,00.html

It looks like the Food Standards Agency have recently done some research in this area. Will see if I can find it. Good luck!

WideWebWitch · 19/11/2002 17:41

the fsa additives section is here The research should be on this site presumably.
