Autism? NT behaviour? Or am I over analysing?

Hello fellow parents

I know it’s way too early to tell as my DD is only 10m… I just want to know if I should be potentially looking to take early intervention / doing more as a parent or if this is NT behaviour and so am just being silly and just an anxious FTM. Being a FTM
is so hard as it’s all new, you don’t know what to expect, you get so much conflicting advise/info and don’t know if you’re doing the right job :(

Here are my concerns:

  • little eye contact (sometimes she even looks for a split second then drops her head down as if she is shy)
  • shaking her head, for the last few weeks she is constantly shaking her head, not just every now and then like before
  • always twirling her wrists (but more so when excited)
  • stares at her hands / fascinated with them
  • fascintated by the smallest of crumbs e.g. on her highchair or things on the floor like a-bit of glitter
  • sometimes stands upside down (head on the floor and bum in the air)
  • sucking (not like sucking a dummy) but with her mouth open and breathing/sucking in and then blowing on items/toys/or her hands. Loves sucking in air (if that makes sense!)

However she is crawling, does say “dadada” “bababa” “mamama” but not in context, can sit unaided, claps her hands, waves (not in context), does enjoy peek-a-boo, responds to her name most of the time

TIA x

forgot to add, DD also asymmetric crawled when she started crawling, and she also strokes every surface she comes across really slowly.
The Asymmetric crawling I googled because I had never seen it before and all that kept coming up was Autism!!
I must note though she crawls normally now?

hi @AlwaysSeekingComfort she is normal. 10 months is too small to think about autism. responding to name is too good. waving and clapping too.
stop over analysing and enjoy your baby.

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 11/01/2023 18:19

hey @Jaydenmom12 thanks for the reply. I am
definitely enjoying DD, she’s the apple of my eye. suppose was just wondering if I should be keeping an eye on these things and if there’s anything I should be doing in general as being a FTM i’m clueless.

hi @AlwaysSeekingComfort i am just like you. FTM over analysing my son's development. he is now 23 months old still i have concerns but people around me keep on reassuring me he is okay. i also feel he is okay, but sometimes i get this anxiety and over testing my kid. i wish i can jump to the day when i have no concerns about his development anymore.
i have had the same concerns that you posted when he was that age but when days passed it became fine.

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 11/01/2023 19:34

hey @Jaydenmom12 i’m sorry you are still having concerns. i dream of that day also! hopefully you are not far off where you can relax.

@AlwaysSeekingComfort Hey
i just wondered how your little one was getting on? My son does the hand twirling and feet and started flapping. He does the head shake and also bum in air too
has your little one stopped any of them things? X

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 16/02/2023 21:56

@Danielle1989x hi lovely. She still does all these things (a lot). Shes even started opening her mouth really wide when twirling her hands and feet.
I've even noticed her sorting toys very specifically. However im just watching and waiting at the moment as she's too young to do anything... but I definitely feel in my gut she may later be diagnosed with something...
it's very worrying isn't it, unfortunately I have no advise apart from try to enjoy your baby but be their advocate when you feel you need to x

Hey @AlwaysSeekingComfort it is so worrying. I just realised your post was only last month so your little one may still have time to stop those things. Fingers crossed for you !!

but as you said. Sometimes our gut just knows. To me the hands and feet it’s just not right. He also sticks his tongue out a lot, blows raspberries still. Does the bum in the air throughout the day and now he does hand flapping but his just turning 10 months and I really do hope I am wrong and he will surprise me
my other main concern is that he has no comforts and hates cuddles. Pushes me away :-(
I think that’s what makes it harder because he doesn’t let me love him like I want to. Those lovely mummy/son cuddles all snug on the sofa. I only get to do that when he is asleep. So sad xx

Hi I am so worried I can’t stop overthinking it my 6month old daughter twirls her wrist and moves her fingers every now and again? She’s done it for about 2months I have kept an eye on it. I have been googling 😞😔🤦‍♀️ Now I’m worried that she has symptoms of autisum? Did anybody else’s baby do this when they was 4-6months old? It is normal or not? I can’t help but worry information would be so much appreciated 😞

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 22/02/2023 07:51

@Sha76 Hi, if that's your only concern and she does it "every now and then" I really wouldn't worry.

My LO has been twirling feet/wrists for months constantly, did probably start before 6m but she has loads of other quirks too that makes me suspect ASD or some other neurodivergent behaviour.

Again, it's too early to tell so I am just trying to take it day by day and just enjoy my little bundle of joy. You should try to do the same too :) you don't get this time back, time goes so fast x

I do completely understand your worries though, as being a mum is so stressful lol and I don't think we'll ever stop worrying until they're like 40yrs old! But please just try to enjoy the now

Being a FTM can be daunting, but just spend the time enjoying and not analysing what ifs. It goes so very quickly and you don’t want to waste these precious moments.

@AAlwaysSeekingComfort how is ur baby now

MaryMoppins · 22/07/2023 23:44

@AlwaysSeekingComfort hi OP, just wondered how is your LO doing now?

MaryMoppins · 22/07/2023 23:46

@Danielle1989x , @Sha76 how are your babies now?

Danielle1989x · 23/07/2023 09:11

@MaryMoppins My little boy is now 15 months and he is doing so well
he has a huge range of vocabulary. Probably says 30+ words but he comes across very advanced to his other friends his age. He points, claps, waves all appropriately. He tells me what he wants for example when he wants to get out of his high chair he says out. He says boobies when he wants milk.
he is a handful! Has lots of energy and is into absolutely everything. He plays with all toys the correct way and even roll play with babies and feeding them. I have flash cards and he points correctly at all the things I ask him to show me where it is. He also knows almost all body parts. I even ask where something is and he goes ‘ere it is’
He loves a football. Kicks is around my living room like ronaldo. He calls for his sister ‘Ivy’

My only concern is he still does his hand twirling when he is frustrated / wants something and he can be a bit of a moaner. I have been concerned for like anxiety but I just have to see how this pans out and if he outgrows it or it sticks. Other than that he is a very clever little boy who is doing so well right now.
