boy doing nappy striptease at nighttime

At 2 years and 2 months old, my little boy has taking to removing his nappy at nap time and nighttime.

He is fantastically proud of himself for performing this feat, announcing proudly, 'Look. Mummy. I put my nappy in the bin.' And he doesn't seem at all bothered by the ensuing puddles.

We haven't tried potty-training yet - as he can't sit still on the potty for long enough. I actually don't think it would solve the problem .

Has anyone had experience of this? What can I do to solve it?

Put his nappy on backwards so he can't reach the tabs And explain you'd be much prouder if you didn't have to mop up so many puddles.

Upsidedownegg · 04/02/2008 10:44

I like the idea of putting the nappy on backwards. I have a few real nappies (fuzzybunz) with poppers and thought of using those. Would pull-ups work or would they be too easy to pull up and down?

And do you think this habit will go away?

What does he wear in bed? If he is in a grobag, you can secure the zip closed with an old fashioned nappy safety pin then he can't unzip it to get access to his nappy.

nannyL · 04/02/2008 10:49

at about the same age my charge did this

we switched to easy up pants nappies for day time naps with a poppered vest

(he could get a normal nappy off while his poppered vest remained popped )

then a poppered vest at night time and a baby grow on back to front.

Putting in a gro-bag would help too as they cant get to the nappy

jelliebelly · 04/02/2008 10:50

I would second the grobag idea - it also stops ds scratching/itching his tummy when he gets dry skin patches from eczema!

Meeely2 · 04/02/2008 10:51

the habit will go away - I have 3 yo boy twins and every bedtime for about 3 weeks when they were about 2 and half), striptease, bedroom got turned upside down and i got informed everytime i went in to restore order that they were SWIMMING mummy and didn't want to get their pj's wet!

I was almost at my wits end, but it stopped as suddenly as it started. They are now potty trained in the day but in pull ups at night. They take them off in the morning to have a wee in the toilet then put them in the bin (bless), occasionally one of them will poo in the pull up, take it off cos its uncomfy, not tell me and spread poo from one end of the bedroom to the other......marvelous.

Meeely2 · 04/02/2008 10:52

oh they were in beds btw, so grobags were not an option.

Upsidedownegg · 04/02/2008 10:59

Thanks everyone.

NannyL, DS managed to get a regular nappy off from under a poppered vest yesterday too! He's in a big bed with a duvet, so I don't really want to go back to Grobags.

Meely. PMSL, your DSs sound like my little boy. We happen to have carpet cleaner coming in post loft conversion. Was going to ask him to do DS's room because of the poo patches (which I have tried to scrub off). Do you think I might as well not bother?

It's amazing how cunning you can get and still be outfoxed by these littleones! My ds (17 months) surprised me yesterday by tearing at his nappy frantically after I had put it on yesterday and I was worried I had put it on too tight or he had sore patch. But no he just didn't want it on! This wasn't a one off either as it turned out he had done the same to my dh in the morning. I was hoping it was a one off but now I'm concerned as he is due to be going into a big bed in a couple of months to make room for his little brother or sister.

We have problems overnight with the nappies leaking. It never used to be a problem but all of a sudden unless I am waking him up to go to work I usually find a soaking wet grobag, pj's, bodysuit etc. I have tried going up a nappy size but this doesn't seem to have helped. Does anyone have any advice as I am worried about endless washing once he goes into a big bed as he will need to be using a duvet then rather than a grobag.

Meeely2 · 04/02/2008 11:22

josie, what brand do you use? We were in pampers baby dry, and these lasted for the entire night.

I think you need to wait upsidedownegg, until you know the phase is completely over. My DT's are very sorry when they do have these 'accidents' but sometimes playtime is so absorbing they forget.

Meeely2 · 04/02/2008 11:23

oh and josie, make sure his winky is pointing down when you put him in his nighttime nappy, and that he's not drinking a lot of juice after tea-time.

BITCAT · 04/02/2008 11:25

My dd2 is about the same age she was 2 in dec. She to does this at night after her bath she will go behind sofa, and come out completely naked, and smilling as if to say aren't i clever mummy!! I usually just put the nappy back on and she hasn't done it for a while i think because she knows i am just going to put it back on everytime, it's not worth doing!!

MrsEi25 · 04/02/2008 11:34

my DD is 2year 1month old and she has started doing this aswell. she takes all her clothes off does a poo and takes her nappy off to closely inspect the contents[eewww] up to now we have had 5 poo free mornings in the past 2 weeks or so and she is rather proud of herself for getting undressed i asked the nurse at her 2 year review and she said it is a sign that she is ready to be potty trained oh and pull ups havent helped us as yet as she finds them easier to get off she is like houdini though and manages to get out of almost any clothes incuding gro-bags and back to front babygrows i dont think there is much hope for us but you never know
xx ei xx

Rolf · 04/02/2008 12:10

My DD had a spell of doing this, although in her case it was a protest about going to bed. What worked for me was putting her in pull ups and making a big fuss about her "fancy nappy".

lou031205 · 06/02/2008 21:58

Gaffa tape is working for me. (You think I am joking...)

bonkerz · 06/02/2008 22:03

My DD (25mth) was doing this all the time a few weeks ago. Every time she weeeeeed it would result in nappy off and she was greeting us in the morning naked with poo and wee in bedroom! We changed to pull ups and she is dry now all day in pants and we have a potty and a nightlight in her room although we still put pull up on at night.
Maybe bight the bullet and spend a few days in the house with potty, pants and lots of towels and anti bac wipes!!!

Upsidedownegg · 06/02/2008 22:34

Thanks. ny latest strategy is for DS to wear two nappies at nighttime: a pull-up and a regular Nature nappy. We will add Gaffa tape if he Houdinis his way out of these two.

Re potty-training, he is showing all the 'signs', but does not want to actually go in the potty, only in his nappy. He's 2years 2m - isn't that quite young to potty-train a boy?

(Also I work four days week so don't want to potty-train him until he thinks he's ready.
