Toddler not gaining weight

DS just turned 2. He was born at 50th centile, went up to 75th by 4 months, but from 12 months he’s been gradually dropping centiles. HV weighed him at 18 months and he was between 50th and 25th centile and HV wasn’t concerned and said to wait til 2 year check. I am very slim so she said he might just be finding his ‘natural BMI’. He’s also very active. However, he eats very little, which I explained to her. He just eats very small amounts generally and is just disinterested in food. This is despite the fact we’ve done all the recommended things to encourage eating, ie we did pure BLW, we eat together as a family, never try to pressure him to eat etc.

I’ve just weighed him today and he’s now below 25th centile, and his height is too.

Im so concerned that he’s going to keep dropping centiles. He’s a very bright boy, meeting all his milestones etc, but I’m so concerned with his failure to gain any weight.

has anyone experienced anything similar? What did you do? I don’t want to wait until he’s off the charts before it’s addressed!!

I can understand you being worried @RosieLee2019.

Can I ask you a few questions?

Is he having milk or formula and if so how much?

Is he very tall?

Is he very active?

RosieLee2019 · 03/12/2022 21:06

He still breastfeeds although only in the mornings and evenings. He has also has a cup of cows’ milk each day.

He used to be fairly tall but when I tried to measure him today he was coming up as 25th centile.

He is very active - never stops. I don’t know where he gets his energy from!

I think the height is of more importance than they weight as the weight gain can often slow as they run around.

I think I'd take him to the GP tomorrow, tell them your concerns as get them to weigh and measure him and record it in the red book.

We did this with DS when his growth slowed, mainly due to how often he got tonsillitis. Getting the GP to record it is a good baseline of he needs to be referred to a Paediatrician.
