I live in North Liverpool and have witnessed the nonchalant attitudes of the parents in my neighbourhood. The local primary schools are wonderful, with dedicated teachers and excellent resources. However, a large proportion of parents are not aspirational with their children, and this is evident very early on.
For example, generations of unemployment in a family is nothing out of the ordinary, and menial jobs are perfectly acceptable. Of course, all work is respectable, but they have low expectations of the children, which I disagree with.
Parents are generally disengaged, their personal lives contributing to that, and their aspirations are low. It begins in primary school, and regardless of how well teachers do their jobs – and they are excellent – do the children's backgrounds and chaotic home environments affect their learning this early on?
WWYD? The is the option of a school in the city cebtre? Other school in a more central location have a large international community and families.
I'm debating whether this is preferable because those parents would be working at universities or are international students themsleves, who would presumably have better attitudes and aspirations for their children.
75% have English as an additional language but being bilingual myself from a child it was never an issue for me.
