How many words in a sentence at 2.5?

My 2.5 year old is regularly saying 7-9 word sentences, sometimes more! I'm sure he's just average, not trying to say I think he's gifted or anything, but when I look it up it lots of websites say 3-4 word sentences is normal at this age..

Like this evening he said 'oh there's my towel, I thought I had left it on the floor'

Does this sound fairly normal!?

My daughter was a great talker at that age and still is now age 4. It's certainly pretty impressive for his age but I wouldn't say unusually so. You've obviously spent a lot of time with him talking about the things around you so well done you

Thank you that's really kind. I do try and chat to him a lot. It's just me and him at home, and I'm aware that he needs to hear talking, so it's me babbling on at him a lot and trying to have conversations haha. It's amazing seeing them develop isn't it!

His childminder says he talks quite a lot, but didn't seem to say he's above average or anything when I mentioned it to her. So assumed he wasn't crazily ahead or anything. But I'm still impressed with the little man.

My 2.5 year old DS speaks like that in long sentences with past and future tense and lots of prepositions and words like also, because etc. His pronunciation isn’t great though (I can understand him but a stranger couldn’t understand everything) and he struggles with “s” and “f” and runs syllables together. I’ve never been told he’s above average. I think there’s a huge variety at this age. DS’s speech was very average at 18m but has really accelerated.

DGS is two and a half next week. He can put two words together, but hasn't mastered three yet

My DS is 2.5 yrs old. He speaks in sentences like that with correct use of different tenses and words like should/could. He’s slightly ahead of where his sister was at that age but not dramatically so. His speech is probably a bit better than the other children of a similar age at preschool but their coordination and physical development is better. It sounds like your little boy is bright, happy and able to express himself. I’d probably wait a few months before approaching Mensa though!

Mine was pretty conversational by 2.5 and definitely saying more than 3 word sentences. She struggled with expressive language too and I think even now at 4.5 her mouth hasn't quite caught up with her brain and she understands a lot more than she says. She's doing well at school. Brilliant with numbers. Picking up reading really quick and getting to the point where she's sortof teaching herself a bit. She's quite bright but not rainman 🤣 I think plenty of kids are much more conversational than 3 words by 2.5 and this is just a benchmark really. It doesn't mean much more than she's well on track. I know plenty of kids who talked early who turned out to be very bright but I know plenty who are average academically. Plenty who didn't utter a word til they were 4 turn out to be incredibly bright also. I think you can rest assured that she isn't daft but I wouldn't assume she's a genius either. Just enjoy her. She needs play and a broad range of stimulation right now. You can worry about the rest later

I'm just really proud of him, he was a preemie, and I'm not particularly gifted with verbal / written communication, so surprised that he seems to be doing so well with it. He was a bit slower than his peers with other milestones like sitting and walking (mostly due to being preemie) so it's nice to see him more than catching up. Think most parents have that thought now and again that their child might be a genius haha. Was just quite surprised when everywhere I looked it said 3-4 word sentences are normal at this age. Although from the sounds of it there is a huge variation. If anything it's just nice to be able to chat to the little guy and helps with understanding what's going on with him / his feelings etc.

Oh and please don't misunderstand you absolutely should be proud. I know from personal experience that although a speech delay isn't always a fault of the parents if they're ahead with talking it's probably because their parents are doing all the right things. Be proud mummy he sounds wonderful xx
