12 month old - delayed milestones?

Hi everyone. I’m here after some advice and other mum’s experiences. My little one will be 12 month next week and he is still not clapping, waving to bye (I will come to this) or pointing. He clapped only once about a month ago and that was it. He used to bang two toys together but he is not doing that anymore. When I do sing ‘if you’re happy…. Clap your hands) he actually waves (really cute though). Of course I show to him always how to do it and so on. He start crawling at 9 months, pulling himself up at 9.5 months and recently started sofa cruising. He does babble but it’s just regular baby chat such as baba, gaga, dada etc. We had our HV review app couple of weeks ago and she said that he scored a bit lower on some bits and she will give me a call back in first week of November. She did mentioned that 3/5 kids she sees daily they score lower. He does make eye contact, smiles to everyone, gives hi5, no problems with textures, no food aversions. Knows how to put small boxes into bigger boxes, play with a car and so on. I’m just upset, I guess, as all other babies I know, which are younger than him, already clap. A friend of mine said he is just very independat and he can’t be bothered to clap, as he is focusing on other stuff. He plays alone, if he hears any strange noise he will turn around, if I tell him ‘can I have the toy’ he will put in my hand. So…. Not sure if I just have an independent baby or these are early signs on autism?

thanks everyone

Hi :)

I wouldn't worry he sounds like he's thriving in other areas !! .....

If this makes you feel better , my little boy (now 23 months ) only started doing 'gestures ' clapping , pointing , waving etc etc at 18.5 months ... this is late of course , but the end of the story is positive , he's now talking in sentences and absolutely fine !! I did go into panic mode at about 16 months-18 months realising he was behind . But wow when he caught up he caught up quick !!!

It's so hard not to worry though I absolutely get it !!

Thanks for your answer! That’s kinda reassuring, tbh! He is actually putting his hands together but he just doesn’t clap 🤣 i think I kinda made an obsession about this, to be fairly honest and this is eating me from inside!

He sounds fine to me! I hate the hv reviews, really kicks in the anxiety! If you make him clap his hands is it making a sound? That’s the only way mine learned was hearing the clap! But it’s not something I’d really worry about on it’s own!

Pretzel12 · 22/10/2022 11:02

it is making a sound, but he just won’t do it 🤣 i tried several ways and just refuses. He will smile or laugh, but that’s it. I think my concern comes that he is not doing few things. Also, the 12 month sleep regression hit us really badly now and he just wakes up crying and tries to babble constantly!

Pretzel12 · 07/05/2023 12:50

Hi. He has definetely improved a lot. He started nursery when he was 14 months and he now says about 10/15 words. I’ve also played loads with him at home and encouraged him

Thanks for the update.. Was he able to understand at 13 months of what you saying mom,? From when he got words,? Is he trying to link the words,?

Pretzel12 · 11/05/2023 08:48

he was understanding some stuff at 13 months but I will most likely say that around the 15/16 month mark he start to understand loads and to say words and so on.
