Taking medication. Should a six year old be able to take medication independently ?

My DS who is six takes medication for Epilepsy through a syringe. He has taken it for a year but it’s always been given by an adult. The other day he took it by himself with a little assistance. We sometimes have a bit of a struggle getting him to take it. Last night DH kept trying to give him the syringe saying you can take this yourself but DS kept pushing it away meaning DH had to give it to him. I said he is only six? but should he be able to do it independently?

Oh you just mean squirting the oral syringe in his mouth? Well you have found out he can do it. I agree with not pressuring him though, this is a daily interaction you have lots of emotions and interactions can go into it maybe? Definitely keep it light hearted.

Yes, I think with his young age I agree. But he has shown he is capable
