Belly button bleeding

My newborn (now 3.5 weeks) has had a bleeding belly button for a week. Her cord fell off within her first week and last week I noticed that she had dried blood drops around her belly button. I called the health visitor who came round, cleaned it and said it might bleed again and not to worry but just to keep it clean with water and salt. Its been a week now and I still find dried blood drops when I change her nappy...Is this normal??? should I do something else? she isn't upset by it and it isn't bleeding lots but its still not dry fully... anybody help?

I would pop her along to the doctors if it is not drying up. They might want to swab for infection, which is easy to sort out.

Do you have the nappies that allow the chord freedom? With the little notches. If not, you could cut them to make breathing space for her belly button. Might help things dry up.

I had similar with dd2 though not sure what age she was. Mayb best to check with doc or health visitor but I dont think its too much of a problem as long as its not loads of blood.

Are you folding the nappy inwards which may b rubbing it?

THanks, Was told not to fold and then to fold nappy by different health visitor. Rang Health Visitor today and she's giving me some swabs to clean it. SHe said if it hasn't cleared up totally by next week to take her to the Doctor. I will fold down her nappy because I think you are both right it probably is aggrevating it. Thanks again

just remember to fold outwards rather than inwards otherwise it will rub on the rough bit.
