Hi
Our newborn DS (3.5wks) sleeps through most of the day - despite loud household noise including vaccuum cleaner & older sibling yelling in his face.

I have tried various gentle methods of waking him up, e.g. tickling him, talking to him. When I feed him in the day, I then change him, but he snoozes through the change, then drops off to sleep again.

This isn't a problem in itself - but then he decides to party from midnight to 3am, and it's killing me. And at night, the slightest movement seems to wake him up. He's clearly on New York time (but living in the UK).

As he's breastfed and feeds every 2-3 hrs through the night, I'm averaging about 4-5 hours sleep. If I'm lucky the 2 DSs are both asleep for 30-60mns in the afternoon, and I snatch a nap then, but that's the only time I get to catch up and it's not really enough.

What strategies do you use to wake up sleepy babies and keep them awake? Or is it better to let him adjust at his own time and just ride this out as best I can? When do newborns finally get over their jet-lag?

(Never had this prob with DS1 - he just screamed all day, then slept all night )

HELP!!

My newborn (7 weeks) is just about on proper day and night time but only just, and also does wake up for feeds.
I have found it helps to keep him awake more in the day but this has only really become possible in tyhe last couple of weeks. hth

Thanks Bimblin. Can expect to feel sh*te for some time yet then.

Don't mind waking up for feeds - did it for 10mths last time, but DS1 always went back in his cot and fell asleep almost immediately.

Anyone else?

This is going to make me sound like a dreadful mum (and it was a little bit accidental), but in the very early days with my ds (he is now 9 1/2 weeks) I had one very bad night where I was so shattered that I couldn't wake up. My dh can sleep through anything so lo ended up grizzling and crying for quite a while in his moses basket before anything happened. It seemed to do the trick because ever since he hardly cries at all in the night. In fact he usually only gets fed because I wake up and hear him sucking his hands to death. If your lo isn't crying too much could you try leaving him a little longer before feeding him in the night???
