Speech- answering yes

My DS is 2.5 years old and has delayed speech due to severe glue ear. He has come on a lot since this resolved and since starting nursery but he still won't answer yes to questions. He can say the word but just doesn't say it in response to a question. He'll either repeat the request or say 'me me' for example if I say do you want milk? I've tried waiting for him to reply but he gets very frustrated. Any tips on how to help? Thanks

My son has a speech delay and his speech therapist always said to try to avoid yes/no questions as much as possible. Instead we would say "milk or water?". To start off with he would point to what he wanted but over time started to say the option he wanted.

As for trying to get my son to say a specific word then his speech therapist would always just say to keep modelling the correct language back to him. So "yes, milk". Over time he would start to copy and use the word.

Hope that helps.

That's interesting. We've just started speech therapy but we've only had two sessions so far and I did mention the 'yes/no' thing but she didn't really say much about it. We've gone from him not being able to communicate his wants or needs to him now asking for things in a very basic way such as 'milk me me' or 'that one' and pointing to things and basic sentences such as 'what's that noise' which I'm so pleased about as I was worried he couldn't express himself. Perhaps it's the concept of yes/no he doesn't understand although he understands saying no very well it seems!
