Speech and language delay

Hi all, my son is 3 next month. He literally says 2 words. Has a good understanding and follows instructions well. He can get quite angry and upset. Think this is due to frustration. He points a lot and makes noises such as growling and ‘Uh’

has anyone experienced similar? It’s quite worrying. Thanks!

My son has a speech delay and it was his hearing that was causing this delay. So if you haven't had a hearing test done recently then I would recommend asking to be referred for one. This way you can rule out a hearing problem.

Are you under NHS speech and language department already? If not then you can self-refer and don't need to wait for a referral from doctors or school. Just find the number for your local NHS speech and language department and give them a call to be put on the waitlist. Unfortunately I have found you do need to constantly chase because they are so busy with so many children.

It is positive that he is understanding language and pointing. It sounds like it is an expressive delay which is also what my son has. He is 3.5 years old now and speaks in sentences, although words are still a bit slushy due to his hearing. It took a lot of effort to get here by lots of speech games at home and drastically limiting screen time. It all seems to be paying off.

There is an app for speech delay called Pippin which might be of interest. They have a speech course which introduces teaches you a speech strategy each week and games to play at home with that strategy. Would recommend taking a look:

Hope that helps!
