My 3 year old has cradle cap, is this normal ?

My daughter is nearly 3 and still gets cradle cap. I thought it was just a baby thing. I've bought some dentinox cradle cap shampoo today, which is what I've used before but it never fully cleared up. She's had it from birth now. Any ideas?

my ds had it, big shock when i saw it, when he was about 4,

baby oil i think was the recomended treatment

My oldest son had it well into primary school. I am afraid I am of the "leave it alone and it will eventually go away" school of thought so I did not care about it (also, he has always had thick hair so it was not hugely noticable). The only time I thought about it was when the hairdresser would tell me my son had cradle cap as if I did not know it.

It went eventually (I think - troops off to inspect 11 year old's head)

Leave it whatever you do, DS had suspected cradle cap, we tried to oil it and his head got awfully infected, he's been to the docs three times, had two lots of antibiotics and is finally having cream for infected eczema, still dont know if thats what it is, his hair fell out and everything.

So please, just leave it.

ds (aged nearly six) still has traces, dentinox never worked, olive oil is the best .. rub on leave for as long as poss (pref overnight) and rub neat shampoo in (to dislodge grease) before rinsing, then comb with a fine tooth comb

I swear by vaseline - tip from a south american midwife - slap it on last thing at night, rub it off in the morning with a soft cloth (like a muslin).

Thanks everyone, Victoriansqualor, that's terrible. You would never have thought just oil could do that. I will leave it well alone! It dosn't itch or anything.

I'd not heard of that (victorians) either, agree if its causing no harm leave it !

Yes, our nearly 4 year old ds2 still has it. We haven't done anything about it as the only person who ever notices and comments is the hairdresser...

BroccoliSpears · 23/01/2008 19:20

My little brother had it well into primary school. It went away in the end.

my dd (5yrs) has it. The number of people that say 'your dd has bits of food in her hair'

Pannacotta · 23/01/2008 21:45

DS1 (3) has it. I do try and pick the scaly bits off but he gets very angry "NOOOO, get off my hair Mummy!!"
I'd leave it if you can.

My daughter got it when she was 3 (well it was a scaley scalp anyway). I was using baby shampoo at the time and was advised by hairdresser to try adult shampoo on her.

I did, and the problem went completely. The hairdresser reckoned it was something to do with the 'no tears' stuff they put in childrens shampoo, irritating her scalp.
