My DD is a 2y10m and recently started playgroup (3 sessions in). She's the first in her generation, she hasn't had much contact with other kids apart from fleeting experiences in soft plays and parks. No siblings etc. We've always considered her to be a bit of a chatterbox, her speech is fantastic, she's like a little sponge and seems to take it all in and spit it back out in ways that we've always been impressed with. Which is why it's a shock that 2 sessions in we're being told to keep an eye on the fact that she sometimes repeats questions or things that are said to her.
I don't have much experience with kids so don't really have a yard stick to compare her to, but I thought this was a normal part of learning. To me, when I ask her a question she often (not every time) will repeat it almost as if she's mulling it over, and then give the answer.
For example, I'll ask "do you want to wear the purple top or the green top?" and she'll say "purple or green top? i'll wear the green top!" but she'll answer where is or what is questions immediately without pause. I always assumed that the way she repeated some questions was a little quirk in her pondering the answer, but now I'm worried I've missed something here and should be worried about it?
Playgroup said if she's asked "do you want a biscuit?" she'll reply "Biscuit!" instead of yes or no. But when we got back to the car I asked her did she want a packet of crisps, held up the crisps, and she said "no" - so she IS able to answer appropriately when she wants to. A comment was also made that she doesn't initiate conversation with others very well. I thought this was a bit unfair, she's just new to this all and is probably taking her time processing and settling in. Part of me thinks she's in a new environment, she's excited and overwhelmed...could it be affecting her speech and interacting? I really think/hope it's just a matter of her settling in and time will improve things.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you for any advice!
