Hi,

I need some reassurance or advice that this is normal or development thing. My 4 1/2 month old was recently a very good eater taking 6oz every 4-5 hours. This last week he’s only managed 3oz then either pulls the bottle from his mouth or turns away from the bottle. I’ve tried offering a bottle again after 4 hours and still he takes 3oz. Extending it 4.5 hours and still the same.

ive gone through the health visitors first who suggested the GP as he might have some reflux etc. he’s not got reflux or tongue tie or anything that may suggest a medical reason for this.

I’ve tried a teat size up but size 3 pours out and he gulps it down and it spills everywhere so he’s not ready for that yet.

I thought about teething but can see no signs of any teeth cutting through and he’s not got a lot a dribble that might be making him feel abit sick from swallowing all of that.

I don’t force the bottle into him once he pulls away however sometimes he wants more, will latch then do the same and pull away crying. This isn’t for all his feeds as the night one he takes his bottle fine with no crying.

is this a development thing? Is this a phase or am I doing something wrong?

No idea on that one sorry but have you tried posting in the Infant Feeding Section? You might get a few replies in there Flowers

It may be a phase, is he turning away because there’s other fun stuff he wants to do?

im struggling to remember my baby at this age but I think he used to have some weeks where he didn’t want much, then other weeks would be ravenous.

I know it’s easier said than done but try not to worry, it will pass and you will be weaning soon ☺️

Hi OP
My DD did this when she had oral thrush as feeding was irritating her. It’s quite tricky to tell as their tongue is often coated white after their milk but a white coating on the tongue and or gums is one of the signs. If you suspect thrush then the GP can confirm and prescribe meds.
