7.5/8 month old sleep?

My 7 going on 8 month old sleeps between 8 and 10 hours at night (usually between 8.5 and 9.5) and naps for between 2 and 3 hours during the day. I keep reading that at this age they should be sleeping 12 hours at night and 3-4 hours during the day. Is my baby not getting enough sleep? Most days I'd say she gets about 11/12 hours total sleep.

Does anyone else's baby sleep this little?

Mine! DD1 would have been there or thereabouts (perhaps 30 minutes more on average?). She is 3 now, completely fine, bright as a button – she just doesn't need that much sleep. DD2 has just turned six months, but looks like she's going the same way.

Is your daughter generally happy and alert when she is awake (when not ill, teething, hungry, etc.)? If so, I really wouldn't worry. Certainly with both of mine, if they are overtired, you'll know about it – it just won't be nearly as soon or as often as the books and websites say it will!

Oh I'm glad to hear that! Everyone at my baby groups tell amazing stories of their babies going to bed at 7pm and waking at 7am and when I've tried that with her she just treats it as an extra nap and is awake and ready to go at 9 then not interested in bed until midnight! 9pm is the earliest I can convince her to go to bed! She's generally fine but as you say, she doesn't get sleepy nearly as early as the books say she should be :/

Oh yes, the mythical 7 til 7. The only times that's happened have been when DD1 has been ill, and I'm not holding my breath with DD2. I really wouldn't push the 7pm bedtime – if you do manage to convince her that's bed for the night, it probably will just mean she wakes up for the day at 4 or 5am.

As DD1 got older, she consolidated more of her sleep into the night , about 10 hours, and we picked 8pm to 6am as the least worst option – we get a bit of an evening, but it's not too terribly early a start to the day. And it does at least mean that we've always been able to have a little family time together after work/nursery, generally eat together as a family, etc., so there are some positives.

Have you tired an earlier bed time? My baby sleeps for probably anywhere between 10-12 per night and I find if she is out to bed earlier (I..e 6 /6.30) she still sleeps until her usual time of 6am? That’s been my experience anyway. Some babies just do find with less sleep

My DD barely slept until just over 7 months. She went to bed at 10.30 and woke up at 6.30, then had 3 naps during the day between 20 and 40 minutes.

At 7 months she was pushing her last nap back, so was napping from 7-7.30 then going to bed at 10.30 (was previously a 6pmish nap) then one night she went for a nap at 7.30 and woke up at 6.30 the next morning. That has carried on since, so she has 2 naps during the day and about 11 hours overnight from 7.30/8 until 6.30/7

Them 3 hours between 7.30 and when I go to bed are bliss! I can actually watch a film and drink a cup of tea in peace.

Good luck with your little one

Hi, I know this is an old thread but wondering how things turned out?
my son only gets around 11/12 hours sleep across 24 and I worry it’s too little x

Not the OP, but one of the other responders. DD1 is 4 now, still bright as a button, still low sleep needs, sleeps 10-10.5 hours a night. DD2 is now 2, and similar – at 8 months she would have had about 9.5-10 hours overnight and 1.5-2.5 hours during the day. Now, it's more like 10 hours overnight and an hour in the day, but naps won't last much longer.
