Hi all,

Wondering if some can put our minds at rest. 3 year old is speech delayed, does have a few words and some sentences but just not where he should be, I may be over thinking and keep hearing that all children are different but dont want him to fall behind, some points below:

  1. Has v good understanding, ask him to do many things and he does it. Put laundry in basket, put things in the bin etc

  2. Says certain sentences, 'What you going to do?' , 'Where you go'. He seems to have made up other words for things like Cat or milk. Started recently saying mammy and daddy v clearly.

  3. full eye contact and v interactive, v social (bit too social at times lol)

  4. He is going to a speech therapist at the min and they dont seem to have many concerns, they say he isnt where he should be.

Do you think he will catch up, thats my main concern. He is starting pre-school in September so hopefully that will help.

My son is a very similar age to yours, he is 3.5 years old and is speech delayed. Unfortunately I think Covid hit at a critical time for when they would normally be introduced to lots of language opportunities outside the home such as visiting family and friends, nursery/school, toddler groups.

Have you had your son's hearing checked?

My son has caught up in regards to number of words said/understood but his speech sounds are still a bit behind. So we are still under speech therapy department and working on certain sounds he finds difficult.

I believe the only reason my son caught up was due to all the extra effort and activities we did at home. I found it really hard to know what activities to do at home to help him with speech. After lots of research and Instagram following I now have various games I play with seem to help him.

There is a new app which has just launched for speech delay which gives a list of speech activities to do at home. I would recommend giving it a try. I wish it existed 18 months ago since would have saved me so much time!

My son has a significant speech sound disorder. Recognised to be severe enough he was put in a pre school that had speech and language support attached. The LA SALT suggested and arranged it all. Is your speech therapist private or LA?

Also, I've started blogging about my experience of speech delay here if it's helpful: www.speechdelaymamma.com

My son is almost 6 and still has a recognised speech sound disorder. He is probably about 50% understood. He can't blend certain sounds and can't say certain sounds so will substitute with sounds he can say which of course completely change the word. For example, he used to say 'kiki' instead of baby because he couldn't say 'b' sounds. He can now say baby. Th sounds are difficult as are f sounds.
Is your little one not speaking, or saying things incorrectly?

Thanks so much for replying! He is saying lots and lots of words, hundreds actually and is putting things together but some of his sentences are really difficult to work out, however I can normally pick around 2 or 3 sometimes even 4 words. He does have glue ear which I've been told is having an impact. Its so frustrating for them isn't it x
