Ds will not lie on his tummy for longer than 30 secs - is this a problem?

My ds (6 months) will not lie on his tummy at all, he hates it, cries like he is in pain? He stared rolling over at about 5 months, but has caught on that if he does he can't get back onto his back, so won't roll at all.

My point is, is he in pain? Or am i worrying about nothing?

any bulging in tummy/groin area? Probably nothing but my nephew had hernia at this age. If you're worried take him to doctor - they're used to new mums constantly being in and out of the surgery. I was there so often I'm surprised they didn't offer to set me up a bed.

Girly, my ds absolutely hated being on his tummy, used to make a terrible fuss about it. I worried that it would delay his learning to crawl, but it didn't seem to. Willow is right - get it checked out, just in case, but it's probably completely normal.

Tissy · 04/11/2002 12:44

My 9 mo dd still refuses to lie on her tummy, and hasn't shown any inclination to crawl, although she will happily "walk" for ages if supported. I doubt if your ds is in pain, probably just cross!

elliott · 04/11/2002 13:06

My ds also hated being on his tummy, but was an early crawler - he would sit and lean forward further and further until he ended up on all fours.
He first learnt to roll from tummy to back, so every time we put him on his tummy he'd promptly roll back over! Took him ages to roll from back over to front though - he didn't really do it until he was able to get up to sitting position, thus never having to be in the dreaded 'tummy down' position!
Its interesting how strong, and how different, their preferences for certain positions are. I've noticed that lots of babies sit with their legs straight out - I don't think I've ever seen ds adopt that position, he always has his bent in a kind of buddha position. Makes him look very comical when he bounces up and down - looks like he is trying to do 'yogic flying'!!
(just seeing if I can morph a thread off its original topic )

Thanks ladies, i guess i am guilty of comparing ds with dd, she loved it on her tum, and was only happy when lying on her front, she crawled at 6 months, walked at 10 months ans was generally very strong.

Elliot, ds is very buddah like too, he can sit quite well unsupported, i think he may end up being a bottom shuffler as he tries very hard to launch himself everywhere whilst sitting, its very amusing to watch!

Willow2, I have checked his bits and tummy and there are no obvious lumps or bulges, however when he was born he had a small umblical hernia which went away when he was about 10-12 weeks, maybe its something to do with this?

Both DSs used to be sick within 10 secs of being ontheir tummys - hence I never let them stay rolled over! It didn't stop them crawling earlyish though.

bells2 · 04/11/2002 13:44

My very nearly 12 month old also screams blue murder when placed on her tum and still has no interest in crawling.

honeybunny · 04/11/2002 14:08

Girly, neither of my 2 boys liked lying on their tummy. ds1 sat at 22weeks and crawled at 8months, walking by 1, but avoided at all costs being face down. ds2, now nearly 7months, also avoids it, but having mastered back to front rolling, he'll stay happy for a while before being asked to turn back. He wont take any weight on his feet yet, and is generally much slower at everything when compared with ds1 at the same age. I guess they just all develop at their own pace. But as mine are only 17.5months apart, I'm sure some of it is down to the fact that I don't get nearly as much time to spend with ds2 to encourage his motor development.

sjs · 04/11/2002 14:54

Girly - you might be right about the bottom shuffling...My dd hated being on her tummy - would cry almost immediately... I kept trying for the first few months, but she hated it so much I pretty much gave up and let her sit up which is what she wanted.
She was a bottom shuffer (hysterical to watch!) and never crawled at all until months and months after she could walk.

music · 04/11/2002 16:31

All this talk of bottom shuffling does make me laugh!(: My dd(7 months) doesn't much like lying on her front, but loves sitting in the bhudda position and shuffling forwards. Very funny to watch!! They are all so different aren't they.

aloha · 04/11/2002 19:13

My ds has always hated being on his tummy - right from birth. Has never crawled but now, aged 13months cruises the walls and furniture like a demon and loves to walk holding my hand. However, he now can only sleep at night on his tummy. I can't work it out either. He used to yell and cry when on his tummy but I'm certain he wasn't in pain, just fed up and hated the view! BTW I personally don't see much point in encouraging babies to walk, crawl or putting them in positions they don't like, mainly because I don't think it works and because I don't think it's important. We all -disabilities excepted - end up able to walk in the end, what's the benefit of getting there a few months earlier?

Melly · 04/11/2002 21:07

Girly, my dd always hated being on her tummy. She didn't roll over until she was about 9 months and then I think it was only a means to an end so she could get into the "ready to crawl" position. Interestingly though she now almost always sleeps on her tummy or on her side. Like others have said, they are all different and I wouldn't worry too much.

Girly · 05/11/2002 08:46

Well, you have all put my mind at rest now!

Aloha, i learnt my lesson the first time round with dd (now 3) she crawled quite early and walked early too, and i did not know whether i was coming or going, had to have eyes in the back of my head, my main worry was that something was hurting him whilst on his front.

I juat love this site, its nice to have somewhere to bounce ideas off of!

I now have lots of hilarious bottom shuffling to look forward to!!!!!!

My ds never rolled and hated being on his tummy. He bottom shuffled from 9-15 months. So no worries

Bozza · 05/11/2002 11:21

DS slept on his front from an early age. He did not like being put on his front out of the cot (DH maintained this was because he thought he had to go to sleep but I'm not convinced). We thought he would be a bottom shuffler (I was) but he didn't (apart from once at 10 months when an open packet of chocolate buttons was left in his sight...). Nor did he crawl until after he could walk. Now at 22 months (and for several months)one of his favourite games is laying on the floor (or on a cushion dragged on to the floor) and pretending to be asleep for maybe two seconds and then repeating ad infinitum.

Sure he wasn't in pain. But he made it quite clear he was not impressed.

aloha · 05/11/2002 13:47

Girly, hope you didn't feel I was criticising you. I just know how much we all worry and feel it must be our fault if our babies don't develop in the same way to others, and I think 99% of the time they are doing something perfectly normal!

Girly · 06/11/2002 11:26

Don't worry aloha, i did not think you were critising
