Baby tracking on 25th percentile, but head circumference on 75th percentile

Hi, my 7 week old DD has just had the health visitor and everything is fine developmentally, she is tracking along the 25th percentile as she has been since birth.

However her head circumference is larger, on the 75th percentile. The HV isn’t concerned yet and DD is thriving, I’m still a bit worried though, and have read that a larger head can indicate autism.

Has anyone else had experience of this? I’m hoping that DD just has a large head for now and that it’ll all even out in time.

thanks in advance x

I honestly think some babies just have big heads! My baby was born at 32 weeks - weight on the 12th centile but head on the 75th !! Paediatrician said “ok so who has the big head in the family?” 😅 his body has caught up loads and is now on the 50th - hats his size a little small though 🤣

Thank you @AfterGlow87 - that’s reassuring! DD has her 8 week GP check on Wednesday so I’ll ask about it then too,
hopefully she won’t be too worried about it.

I wouldn’t worry. My DS was on the 38th centile for weight but his head circumference shot up to the 80th at his 8 week check. GP didn’t seem phased. Head circumference measurement is notoriously inaccurate (oh and that autism study is likely rubbish)

Hello - did you ever get an answer on this for your baby? I’ve just had the exact same thing yesterday and going out of my mind with worry xx

TashieWoo · 16/03/2023 19:30

Hi, no answer as such but DD is 10 months old now and is absolutely fine, she hasn’t been weighed for a few months as no reason to as she’s growing and thriving, but she’s just tracking along her centile line.

She is showing no signs of autism and is happy, interactive and loves clapping and waving. She has always been a little slower than other babies I think on the gross motor skills but still within the boundaries of normal I think. She isn’t crawling yet but likes practising standing with lots of support. I’ve just sent the form off for the 10 month check but I don’t think the HV will be concerned.

Try not to worry and congratulations on your lovely baby! X
