Social skills struggling

Asking fellow mums for advice
My Son recently started pre school and his main issue is social skills, he is speech delayed and struggles interacting with peers his own age. He has a speech therapist and she has gone into school and said she can see why they are saying it’s a concern, but his speech is affecting his ability to interact, has anyone any experience in this? Or any words of wisdom
A very worried mummy

I don't want to leave you unanswered, but I am not 100% sure what you are asking.
Except there are lots of children at Preschools with speech delays and there are lots of children in pre school who struggle with social and interaction skills.

It is great news that you have a SaLT already.
It is great news that the Nursery are talking to you about their concerns.
It is great news that the SaLT has been in to Nursery and observed him there and now she will be able to give them strategies, advice and targets for him to work towards.

My suggestion would be to ask for an appt with the SENCo to ask how you can all work together to support your ds - home, Nursery and SaLT.

We do have that planned already, we have a meeting next week with the SENco lead in the school. I just wanted to see if anyone had been through it and what happened etc

Well, for some children, it is a delay, and they catch up, and, like you suggest, the difficulty in interacting is due to the inability to be able to communicate their wants and needs and this makes interaction difficult.
OTOH there are other children who have disordered speech and will need some intensive support from SaLT, and possibly specialist interventions at school.
Others who have a hearing impairment that hasn't been picked up.
Others for whom not having speech is part of a much bigger set of difficulties and differences which might suggest an assessment for autism might be needed.
No-one on here would be able to say, without knowing a lot more about your dc.

It's great you have the SENCo appt and that SaLT are already involved, as they will know what the situation is with your ds.

Most his issues are communication
He is speech delayed, he can say some sentences, the speech therapist emailed me to say that it’s clear his speech is affecting his ability to communicate, we got referred to a peadtrician who then advised it was all communication and he needed therapy, which we have started straight away. His understanding is also slightly delayed.
