What to do over the holidays to get my son ready for Year 1

Hi all

Not diagnosed, but my son is almost definitely somewhere significant on the spectrum. His main issue is hyperactivity, poor attention span and speech delay. He's 5 and soon finishing his first year at school.

I'm curious if anyone here attended a summer camp, followed a course or anything with their SEN child that had some significant results. My son is booked in for speech therapy over July and August but feel it won't be enough

I am in a somewhat similar boat with my DD1 age 5, who school beleive may have ADHD.I am worrying about her going into year 1 too, how she will cope with the increase in structured activities etc, but what I would say though is to change your question to 'what can year 1 do to get ready for my child', so flip the onus around, because if he has additional needs then really they need to be making adaptions to meet those. Are you having a meeting with his old & new teachers (possibly SENCO aswell?) Thats what I've asked for.Other than that, I guess try to do afew structured activities within his daily routine, eg: reading, letter forming, numbers and board games, but also allow him to enjoy his summer break and PLAY...after all that's what children aged 5 are designed to do, as much as schools sadly think otherwise.
