Cat allergy in 8 month old?

For the past 3 months my DD has been very congested. It started with a cold which went but the congestion never has really. We use saline drops which used to make her sneeze and snot would come out but for the past 2 months using the drops makes no difference at all.

As of a week ago she now has a dry cough aswell. I took her to the doctor who says she has asthma - she hasn't - she doesn't wheeze and I think the doc just leapt on the fact that me and my DP occasionally get mild asthma.

I've tried the plug in vapourizer, putting olbas oil on the outside edge of her cot sheet and raising the head end of her bed all to no avail. I've tried one of the bulb snot suckers (sorry, don't know what they're called ) but the end of it is too blunt and it doesn't get in her nose and basically does nothing.

My MIL who we live with has 3 cats, someone today mentioned my DD could be allergic to them even though she's been in contact (no touching) with them since she was born, could they be the cause? Any other ideas on how to help my DD to breathe? Thanks.

i wouldnt rule out the asthma as dc it is very common especially with this weather

i would of thought if was a cat allergy symptoms would be more severe

when my ds was teething he appeared to have continuous cold normally with an allergy you would have really itchy eyes wheezing

mild asthma coughing is normally a symptom and not nessassarily wheezing

my friend slittle boy has mild asthma and has no wheezing

it could be a combination of asthma and teething and also the weather as my ds 2.7 has had a cold for 8 weeks due to virus and continuous common colds

hope dd feels better soon

Well, it does sound as if it could be asthma - why are you so sure she doesn't have it?
If it is, then you probably won't want to hear this (or at least your MIL won't) but you need to keep her away from the cats.

Recent research has shown that:
about 50% of asthmatics are allergic to cats and, if that weren't enough, cats make just about all asthmatics' asthma worse, whether they are allergic to them or not (I have no idea how that works - something about the proteins in the dander I think).

Not good news for asthmatic cat lovers

Its just that me and DH both have asthma and her symptoms don't tally with any of ours

childhood asthma in babies is completely different to adult symptoms as children normally grow out of it

DS and I are both allergic to cats and dont have to touch one to get the symptoms. Just being in the same house as where one lives set it off for us. IIWY I'd move.
