An EARLY teether...

Imagine my surprise to feel the ridge of my 14 WEEK old's first tooth poking through her gums this morning!
Anyone else had an early teether? Did the next teeth follow quickly? Will she have a full set by her first birthday?!

great that your bub has a tooth. How sweet! Are you bf or bottle-feeding?

Ds (2 y 2 mo) was an 'early teether' and is just getting his last tooth this week. They came in a big rush up until they are about 14 months, then they have come in pairs every three months since then.

Gosh - my dd is nearly 11 months and still no sign!

LOL - yes DDs first tooth started pushing on the gum at 11 weeks and poked it's little head through at week 15 I think. She's now got all bar two and they are coming through at the mo (she's 14 months). It has good and bad consequences.

My advice to you is invest in a bottle of Nurofen for children - much better than Calpol - it has an antiinflammatory agent in it which reduces the swelling of the gums. Actually you might have to wait two weeks though - I think it may be from 4 months.

The teeth will probably come thick and fast but some of them take MONTHS to actually break through despite you being able to see them in the gum

DS was an early teether but he is now behind his peers on his canines and molars. He has been teething the longest of the bunch, bane of my life. But the other early teether I know was all done by 14 months. So I think it varies hugely.

Another thing you need to know is that teeth don't always follow the uniform, two at the top, two at the bottom, two more the same, then incisors, then molars, pattern.

DD had four at the bottom, then two at the top, another two at the top, all her molars and is only now getting incisors! It's all normal.

Some kids also don't get teeth till they are close to two. Parents worry either way, tis part of the job description.

DS1 started teething at 16 weeks but the first tooth didn't come through till he was 6 months.

So funny to hear how different they all are! My ds was a textbook teether, so that made it all the more surprising!

She's only just stopped being colicky, so maybe teething pain was part of it, but they don't seem to be bothering her.

I'm breastfeeding, btw. Ouch!

Hi Phlossie

DD is 16m and got her fist early compared to her peers (I have to admit I don't remember exactly!) about 4m. Since her first 2 they have all come out of order, and still has no canines but all her molars and (just) all her front teeth. We got quite a long break then all of a sudden 4 or 5 appeared in 10 days! It was tough but I am hoping we are over the worst now.

She was "teething" from 8 weeks though which did not suprise me as I got mine early (was born with 2!!!).

I second the Ibroprofen as it made a huge difference when someone on here recommended it to me. You can even combine it with Calpol (alternate the 2 every 2 hours) if it is severe. Start with the lowest dose and see what happens. I can give her Calpol and within 5 mins she is back to her normal bouncy self so please don't worry about it!

Oh and on the BFing thing, read up on techniques to stop them biting, I find it only lasts a day or two as the tooth is "crowning". In fact now at 16m I know she has one on the way as she bit me several times today

phlossie · 13/01/2008 21:27

She was nipping a bit a few days ago. I fed her brother until he was 11 months (when I got pregnant with her) and he never bit me. Maybe I was lucky!

Three teeth by 12 weeks! and he is now 8 months old and has 4 at the top and 4 at the bottom, and another one poking through... And without too much problems. I gave him the powder thingly bobby and I can't say if it helped, but he hasn't cried much at all.
