At five and a half months?????

I think DD1 was just about sitting up at this stage. Or possibly not.

Rantmum · 11/01/2008 18:43

Um no. I would not worry - your baby is still very very young in the grand scheme of things. And they all catch up eventually. My ds did all the physical stuff early - has not made him better at walking than his peers now that they are all at it.

bumbly · 11/01/2008 18:44

thanks - he klaso doesa not sit up and he doesnt roll

only rolls to front and no further much to his frustration!

Thinking about it, in fact DD1 was about the same at his stage. She was virtually immobile. I remember because we moved into this house and it was a building site, but you could just put her down and she'd stay where she was. And she must have been about six months, you know.

jorange5 · 11/01/2008 18:50

I think I know what you mean, I think lots of babies have that 'pushing up' thing with their legs when you hold them up - even when they are tiny. i wouldn't worry if he isn't doing it nor would i believe that holding him up now and again will harm his legs (as long as he seems happy doing it). That is an old wives tale.

TheIceQueen · 11/01/2008 18:51

DS1 was pushing up on his legs, knees locked and all that from about 6 weeks, as was DS2.

DS1 finally walked (never crawled) at 18 months, DS2 walked at 10 months - so no correspondence there to standing/walking age.

DS3 is now starting to show more interest in using his legs (at 7 months) - time will tell if he's a early, late or average age walker.

Izzybel · 11/01/2008 18:55

I definately wouldn't worry about not standing at 5 and a half months. My 7 month old DD is still a bit wobbly with sitting unaided. She's quite strong and wiggly but she probably wouldn't be able to stand with me just holding her hands or anything like that. My friend's DS, who is only 10 days older can stand alone holding onto an object or walk across the room with assistance. He seems quite ahead of my DD physically but she is good at other things, such as feeding herself etc. DD took ages to roll over, whereas it seemed that babies of the same age had been rolling for ages. All babies are different, it's hard not to worry, but try not to. 5 nad a half months is still very young to be doing things like standing and even sitting up.

Too young to be worrying about not standing yet.

bubblagirl · 11/01/2008 18:57

you could get a dor bouncer to encourage him to move legs as will relieve weight

but dont worry too much all dc learn different things different stages my ds didnt crawl untill 8 mths stood from 12 but didnt walk untill 14 half months

door bouncer was good for my ds it helped alot with being able to just weightlessly move

TheIceQueen · 11/01/2008 18:58

oh - and DS1 and 2 were both sitting unaided VERY well by 6 months, DS3 only sat up unaided for the first time properly on Boxing Day (at just 7 months) - he's getting better now - but still keeling over.....

He can now however (at last LOL), roll not just from his back to his front, but the other way too!!

bumbly · 11/01/2008 19:01

yes did exactly that got bouncer

but yesterday although loved it he clearly didnt know what to do and put foot face down rather than on sole - looked painful

so a bit worrying he will damage toes etc

think will wait for a bit
to use it more

OP posts:
bubblagirl · 11/01/2008 19:09

thats fine my ds was always on tip toes thats how they learn they dont put foot flat down untill more aware and standing

its all part of learning what they can and cannot do it wont damage toes my son was on tip toes when in walker and as legs got stronger feet went down then attempting to stand

let him explore they learn that way how to do things if too worried put pillow under feet but reassure you my gp said was perfectly fine at this age to do that

bumbly · 11/01/2008 19:10

oh wow really makes me feel better

kind of like he was walking with top of toes pointing invertedly on nail if see what i mean!

Izzybel · 11/01/2008 19:16

TheIceQueen - my DD did that. Couldn't roll over, except to on her side and didn't seem interested in going any further, when she suddenly rolled onto her front at mum and baby group. I was just thinking "yay! At last" when she rolled the other way too!
Bumbly - just put him in the bouncer every so often. I think it takes a while for them to realise what they have to do. We got one of the rainforest jumperoos for DD and she just used to hang there as if to say 'what the hell?' lol.

handlemecarefully · 11/01/2008 19:16

You are certainly worrying waaaaay too early

chipmonkey · 11/01/2008 20:00

I would think most babies wouldn't be standing at this age. Stop worrying!

Dynamicnanny · 12/01/2008 13:46

Every baby is an individual and takes his and her time - but you wante her to stand at 5 months!!! and she only rolls over - Thats fine she's 5 months old!!!

lulumama · 12/01/2008 13:50

bumbly, my DS did not bear weight on his legs until well after his first birthday

try not to wish the time away, he is still a small baby... enjoy this time, and don;t be in a hurry to reach every milestone

there is an average time,by which the majority of babies will have reached a milestone, but for there to be an average, some babies do it quicker, others are slower.

you have had a lot of worries about your baby;s development, but he sounds normal. don;t worry, enjoy this baby stage, it is gone too soon anyway.

PerkinWarbeck · 12/01/2008 13:53

DD showed no interest in standing, even supported with lots of help, until 9months. then one day my back was turned and she stood up herself (supporting herself on the bookcase) to get a better view of Match of the Day.

Sometimes LOs do things in leaps and bounds rather than developing gradually as the books would insist they do.

HereComeTheGirls · 13/01/2008 07:59

My DD is nearly 15 months and not interested in standing...well, now she is showing a slight interest....I would say 5.5 months is WAY too early to worry!! (and she has been seen by a physio who says her movements are all normal, she is just taking her time!)

cherryredretrochick · 13/01/2008 08:24

My dd was very early with all the physical stuff, at 6mths she could crawl. I remember her being the only one in her massage group of about ten babies the same age. Think it is perfectly normal, If you are worried about joint noise I would see GP just to put your mind at rest.

bumbly · 14/01/2008 09:49

yes thanks for all messages - reason been asking is cuz all babies i know are way ahead of my lo

i have no rush what so ever to get him to stand - just been told by my MIL that he should be bearing some weight on legs by now

hence my queries
