What is reflux?

I have heard a lot mentioned on this site about reflux particularly in relation to colic and wondered if anyone could tell me more about it. In the last couple of weeks my ds has started to produce a lot more sicky burps, sometimes quite a long time after he has fed and they are obviously taste nasty to him and often make him cry. Also if I lie him down too soon after feeding he makes some concerning noises which sound like he is regurgetating and sometimes choking. Does this sound like reflux??

And also does anyone have any tips on how to wind a baby when they fall asleep at the breast?

Hi,
My dd was very sicky, I had to hold her upright for 40 - 60 minutes after every feed. One doctor said she had silent reflux but it turned out she had wind issues and vomited all the way until she started solids.
Reflux is usually when dc brings up the entire feed, it can be silent or very painful.
I recommend seeing your GP or HV, they can tell you more about why your ds is having problems.
Also a cranial osteopath might be able to help, I wish we had seen one early. Also baby massage can do wonders for windy babies.
Good luck

reflux is generally the regurgitation of a large volume of the babies feed.

silent reflux is the warning signs without the regurgitation.

some warning signs are : fretting when feeding, only taking small feeds, regurgitating/acting in pain after feeds

my ds had silent reflux until about 4mo. he never took more than 3oz of milk (i switched from bf to ff to show hvs and docs he wasnt* eating) and was a generally unhappy baby.

at 5 mo it changed to normal reflux, he would drink 3-4oz and bring back 3/4of that!

he was still gaining weight, albeit slowly, so docs wouldnt do nayting. till he was about 6 mo and he was put on prescription formula (pre-thickened) it got better but he was still sicky, although it meant he could drink more as didnt associate milk with pain.

now hes 14 mo just moved onto cows milk and is sick about once every 2-3 weeks.

i'd say dont try to jump to conclusions but you know if your baby is unsettled but gettin hvs/gps to listen is hard! good luck ! i know how heartbreaking it can be!

(and sorry about the essay!)

My daughter had reflux and I also had to hold her upright for 30 mins after each feed. We got through a lot of washing because she had to be changed after every feed. When she was sick, it didn't even smell but just came back as normal milk. Muslins helped a bit but they are not good at collecting large volumes of liquid. I also gave up bf because so much of my milk was being thrown back at me that it was physically exhausting to keep making more.

Reflux is a lot of work. Second baby did not have it and the difference was astonishing. It all worked out fine, my reflux baby is now 7

sounds like reflux but obvioulsy you should call your GP

My DS had silent reflux and he couldn't be laid down flat and was a real comfort feeder

he was never sick but used to get the most violent hiccups, and writhe in pain

Reflux can be managed by meds and other treatments

Definitely sounds like reflux to me. They don't have to be throwing up huge amounts for it to be painful for them and to be damaging their stomach. I struggled to get meds to start off with until I described in detail a typical feed and all the screaming afterwards. Only got the proper meds when I saw a peadiatrician (why can't I spell this word?) at around 4 mths, who was v. concerned about DS coughing every time he was laid down (sign of damage).
Things got better around 6mths but I won't lie, they're not great now and he still doesn't sleep through (see nickname... sigh...)
