Prepping kids between nursery and school

Our little ones (3yo and 4yo) have been at nursery 3 days a week for the last few years with our eldest due to start school in September (we are moving our youngest to the preschool at the same school for 5 days a week). My husband and I have decided that we want to spend as much time as we can with them before they start their school journeys so have decided to take them out of nursery 1 to 2 months before they move to school term timings so we can make the most of being with them.

I would love to know parents experience who have gone through this before. My only worry is they learn so much each day at their current nursery so we don't want to disrupt their development whilst they are at home with us, so best ways to go about it. We read to them before bed so do what we can already, so some insights into ideas of keeping up what they are learning during the daytime at home.

What they learn at nursery is mainly a routine. You could make up your own, but just do basics. Do a register calling at 9 am. Then do reading/story time, free playtime. Then some numbers games, depending on how much your DC know, reciting alphabet and counting numbers, then play and lunch. Most children in nursery attached to school, will be on holiday for 6 weeks before starting school in September, so you are only adding a couple more weeks on.

Thanks @Mindymomo. Yes I totally agree with routine. Both myself and DH have been big believers of routine since our firstborn arrived (although running registration at home hasn't come into play yet Wink). We try and make life as fun as possible with playtime but I love your suggestion about numbers and learning topics. It will be both DC so great to find ways of helping them both keep on top of what they've been learning at nursery so we they can continue to recall what they've learnt and hopefully give them both the best start.

Personally I think you would be better off leaving them in nursery part time so they are used to the routine and have time to play with their friends.

I wouldn’t bother with teaching numbers and letters at that age or trying to have a school routine at home. Just bring them for a walk or to a playground or let them play with their toys at home. Or do baking, make playdough, dance, do jigsaws etc

Thanks @SuperSleepyBaby - as I say the main thing is we want to spend this last bit of time before they are both in a school term timetable. Activities definitely something I want to do a lot of when they are here but I know that where they are at nursery they have started to learn their numbers, reading and writing as well as forest school play.
