What's a good 'active' toy for a nearly 4 month old?!

He's bored with his activity gym thingy. Loves his Lindam doorway bouncer (only started that a week ago because of waiting for reliably non-wobbly head), but that's for short periods only...

He's fine with holding his head up but obviously can't sit unless propped. He likes doing 'stand ups' on an adult's lap & turning ELC soft brick round in his hands.

What would ppl recommend? TIA

hi carrie

my dd was about 4 months when it was christmas and i remember she got a keyboard sort of thing (just a wee one) and she used to lie on her tummy and press the buttons or we would set a beat and that would attract her attention and she would press random keys and be delighted! hope this helps xxx

ps wait til you put your xmas tree up - get twinkly lights and your son will sit and stare at it for ages!

The one thing that never fails to fascinate for ages is newspaper which my ds (5 months old) would suck to death if I let him . As an alternative his favourite toy (which my dd also loved at a similar age) is a soft spider with lots of bright colours as well as black and white checks, and has feet which squeak or crinkle as well as teethers attached. Whoozits are good or ELC do some similar things (animals or cubes) with good bits to chew that are not too overwhelmingly big.

If that's the ELC spider thing - got one, he's HORRIFIED by it!

Keyboard sounds good idea...can you remember where it came from?

neighing neddy- from boots-

we didn't get a gym- got a music thing from mothercare
that she loved- the lights and music would keep her amused for ages. She still loves it now at nearly 10 months and my friends ds still uses his at 3

vict17 · 21/11/2004 23:27

definitely this
8 month ds still loves this, has loads of crinkly bits, a mirror, bits to play with. A must have imo. You just lie them down and put on top of them and they play for hours

le maze inchworm was also a fave

to be honest, it was a really basic one that she got as a present for xmas, carrie. but she loved it so much we bought another one that was more fancy. she is 2 now and STILL plays with it!!! its from vtec and has a wee microphone and plays animal tunes etc. if i remember rightly we got it in toys r us but cos its vtec i suppose other places will have it too.

ds's favourite at that age was a "Skwish" . We also had an activity centre thing (a bit like a baby walker, except it didn't go anywhere) which let him sit upright in it, and had various activities around the side of it. He had that at 4 months and although it was quite expensive, he used it so much that we had good value from it.

CarrieG · 22/11/2004 14:33

Oooh. Quite tempted by that LunarSea (he likes being upright) but a bit worried about the top weight being 24lbs...he's 19lb now! Thanks to everyone for suggestions, shall check them all out
