Hi, I'm new to Mumsnet so I hope I'm posting in the right place!
My ds is 2 in a couple of weeks and I would like to have a birthday party for him and a few (very few!) of his little friends. I just was wondering if anyone had any hints, tips or good ideas because it will have to be at my house really being the middle of Winter and everything! I was just going to invite his 4 main friends, lay on a bit of food and let them play with ds's toys really, because I don't know if they are all a bit too young to get party games really... I'm also wondering about practical things like length of party, time of day, and stuff, so any advice greatly appreciated!! Suddenly feeling new to all this being a mummy stuff again and he's 2!!!
Thanks,
Kristy x

Keep it short and sweet with a few organized games if you like.

I think afternoon works well as most kids that age eat tea at 5 is, so either a snaky sandwich, criss, fruit 7 veg sticks etc at 4.30 works well. As it is his Birthday I would pick a time that works well for his sleeps!

Pass the parcel is always a winner and the do get it at that age. singing songs as well. but lets face ti they love free play with someone elses toys!!!

OH and wear ear plugs!! (only joking)

My DS is two in Feb and we have been to two parties for other two-year olds so far. First was way back last April on a lovely sunny day but was held at their house at 12pm. They mainly played randomly with toys etc round the house, then ate (sandwiches, sausages, crisps, veg sticks, quiche, cakes and biscuits etc), and the only "organised" game was pass the parcel at the end. It all worked well though but they were able to use the garden too.

Second party was before Christmas on horrible peeing down day (like today) and was held in small soft play area at local leisure centre at 4pm. Kids played for an hour or so, was great as they didn't really need to be chaperoned as staff were there, then parents laid on food (could have got food provided by leisure centre), which was very basic, just sandwiches and sausages and a few crisps, plus cake to take home, but it was perfectly adequate for the kids to be honest and DS had a whale of a time.

He enjoyed the second party more, but probably mainly because he was older and able to join in more.

Sorry, have rambled.... .

He will not be getting a party himself when he turns two in Feb!! [mean mother emoticon].

We had our ds1 4th birthday on Sunday and I was dreading it, being in doors and all, however, it worked really well. 3 to 5pm, sandwiches, sausages, crisps, same as the others really. Pass the parcel was great, but pin the tail on the donkey was not so good, bit young! The best thing was free play, as Nappyvalley says, and it was no where near as mad as I thought it would be, in a tiny house, so with 2 year olds you should be fine. Good luck.

Thanks all, that's really helpful. BTW, what's the etiquette with Pass the Parcel, does there have to be one parcel for every child? I don't want to upset any of them! (Or their mummies for that matter!)

dd1 was 2 week before christmas and we had a party. All indoors and basically I did food, got some cheap party medals as kids all love them[about £1 in tescos] had a couple of pass the parcels and it was fine. I held it 12-2 on a sunday so lunch was covered.

My ds is 2 in a couple of weeks and I've organised a little party for him. I've done it 3.45-5.45pm so they've all had their naps and will do a little tea (sandwiches etc).

I'm staying away from any kind of organised party games, inc pass the parcel, but will have lots of balloons for them to kick around & have also got an enormous piece of bubble wrap to go on the floor for them all to jump on!

When they did pass the parcel at the party we went to last year there was a small treat inside each layer, and they purposefully stopped the music at the "right" times so that everyone got something. Was quite embarrassing as DS was a bit too young to play properly and kept wandering off. I managed to get him to sit still for 30 secs right at the end so he won the main prize (a playdoh kit, which although he is officially too young for he LOVES).

I do think it is a bit crap making sure every child gets something in pass the parcel. We never did "in my day" and I don't remember it being a problem, but everyone does seem to nowadays.

Yes Egg, I agree, but have to confess that I put a chocolate coin in each layer, so nothing major. Once they are a bit older they could have forfeits in each layer, which I have to say was quite fun, at a 1 year olds party watching dad's doing star jumps whilst singing twinkle twinkle.

I'd steer clear of too much sugar!

Simon Says is a good game for that age - as in 'Simon Says put your hand on your head', and songs with actions like Sleeping Bunnies, Wheels on the Bus etc.

My ds will be 2 in Feb too - no party, but we're going to Longleat!
