Is my nearly 8 month old delayed?

Hi, DD will be 8 months next week and is so lovely. But she doesn't do some of the things that other babies her age do at groups and I dont know whether to worry or not.

  • She doesn't crawl. She drags herself around on her stomach, but only round in circles and occasionally backwards, never forwards. When she reaches for things she lifts herself off the floor and does this little plank movement but gives up if she cant get there.
  • She can't roll from her back to her front. Shes rolled the other way for ages and does it with ease. Sometimes when I'm changing her she spies a toy and reaches for it and I think she will roll but she cant seem to make it to her side. Her little friends have been log rolling for what seems like ages!
  • She can sit unsupported but only if placed there, she cant get from a lying down position to a sitting. She can get on to her belly but it's more of a fall than a purposeful movement. So basically when she is led on her back she is trapped like an upturned turtle!
  • Will weight bear if I hold her in the standing position but she cant support her own weight holding on to anything.
  • Doesn't clap, point or wave. She laughs when I play peek a poo with her but doesn't play it herself.

My mum thinks she is fine and every baby develops differently but it makes me worry when I see other babies her age doing things she cant.

Am I just hanging out with super advanced babies or are any of these things cause for concern?

Thanks

Hi
My baby was the same at 8 months
She finally started to roll back to front at 8.5 months but at 10 months she still rarely does it

She still doesn't crawl, get from tummy to sitting, roll around etc.

Will sit if placed and that's about it
Also turns around on her tummy and occasionally slides backwards

My little one claps but doesn't wave .
But the clapping is recent to

Thanks @jupitermars1345 I guess they will do things at their own pace Smile

My DD started properly crawling at around 9.5 months, at the same time she started consistently rolling and started being able to get herself into the sitting position. Before that she couldn't do any of those things well, or at all. I would say my DD is on the slow end of normal gross motor development, she didn't start walking until 17 months either. All children are different and some of them have to be at either ends of the normal spectrum for certain skills.

But to be honest, I think 7 nearly 8 months is still early for all of the skills you mentioned. I think the average age to crawl is 8-9 months and waving, pointing and clapping just need to be seen by 18 months which is SO far away.

Try not to worry, sounds like your just surrounded by some quite advanced babies!

Thanks @Pandemicpregnancy. It's hard to find the actual age ranges for these things as everywhere seems to say something different!

I suppose I should be making the most of her remaining in the place that I put her!

My first didn't ever really roll much either
She didn't crawl until 12.5 months but she was then walking at 15 months.
She started to sit herself up at 11 months but could sit if I placed her down since 9 months
This baby sat at 7 months if placed into sitting

I just thought I would update this as I searched lots of similar old posts and always appreciated updates!

One month on from my OP, she can commando crawl forwards now and is pretty speedy. She also mastered rolling back to front in the same week and can stand for maybe 10-15 seconds holding on to something. Still can't get into a sitting position and I wouldn't say she seems desperate to be more mobile but she seems happy enough! Oh and she waves too 😀
