Formula-fed 4 month old sudden aversion to feeds

My 4 months old DD is formula-fed and over the past week has stopped taking her bottles which has been difficult to deal with as it seems to have made her unsettled for most of the day then.

She had been taking 6-7oz every 3-4 hours previously but now when I give her the bottle when she seems hungry she wriggles and screams almost the whole time, and some instances will just spit the milk all over herself and then take barely any of the bottle. It started gradually with some wriggling and jerking her head sideways at feeds for a few days (at first I thought maybe she wasn't hungry but she would continue drinking the bottle between this wriggling and then just cry if I took it away) before it progressed to her just screaming and seemingly trying to get away from the bottle 😪

It's even more difficult how she seems to have lost most of her feeding cues. She used to root about, make sucking noises or put her hands in her mouth but now she just does that constantly (even if she has actually just drank an entire bottle her hand will go straight in her mouth).

It seems to have messed up her whole schedule because now she also will not go down to bed at her usual time (about 9pm) and has started waking up in the night again.

I'm at my wits end just don't know what to do with her. It's stopped me taking her out because there is such a scene at bottle time and it's always worse when out in public. She has always been bad to feed in public since she seems too nosey being more interested at everything going on around her, but now it's much worse and happens at home too.

Anyone been through anything similar? Any advice? Just don't know what to do 🤷‍♀️

I know a lot of babies start doing this around 4 months old but have you tried a faster teat?

docmamma · 28/03/2022 13:25

@Vicky1989x She already has the size 3 teat and, strangely, she drinks her milk perfectly during her night feed when she's still a bit sleepy? 🤷‍♀️ It's so strange

My 4 month old is doing exactly this too... word for word the exact same. Teething stuff seems to help a lot of the time. We did speak to the GP as was worried something was going on but no signs of anything more sinister so I'm presuming Teething. Sometimes I just have to feed her in a sleepy state if it's too bad and I feel its been to long between feeds.
