Rode a bike without stabilisers?
DS is 5 in June and can peddle and ride his bike confidently with stabilisers but he is no where near ready to take them off yet.
How old was your child when they could ride a bike without stabilisers?

Mine was just turned 3, my nephew was 5.5 and learned at the same time his sister did at 9. It's very varied and depends on a lot of things and I think age 5 is about average. If you're keen to get him going I would honestly ditch the stabilisers, take the pedals off and teach him to balance first. That's how mine learned so easily.

One of my Granddaughters was 4

DD1 was 4 but DD2 was just 3 as she had an Isla balance bike from just under 2 and learned balance skills early.
Remembering to pedal rather than push was her only barrier!

DS1 was 5 but DS2 was 3. We make the mistake of getting a cheap heavy bike when DS1 was learning! Both started on a balance bike.

I agree if you can then don't skimp on the quality of the bike. My LO's first pedal bike is a Woom 2. Not cheap but it's incredible! Very intuitive and lightweight. Her cousin twice her age (on a cheap 'toy brand' bike) gave up way before her when we took them on a bike ride together and I ended up carrying his bike and it was so heavy compared to my LO's I don't blame him for giving up! I'm not saying this to be snobby and I realise some people can't afford expensive bikes but I'm just saying IMO it's worth the investment. Pricier bikes sell on for more generally too x

Just gone 5
Her bike was just a normal bike (ie not one of those expensive lightweight bikes which are best for children)
However we went straight from balance bike (spent well over a year on it till she was absolutely whizzing round) to bike so didn't have stabilizers anyway

There are lightweight bikes that are less expensive than Isla bikes too! Look at Pinnacles from Evans. Sadly the pandemic has pushed bike prices up.

I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was 14... now I go almost every other weekend :)

NoKnit · 18/03/2022 19:55

Oldest 3.5, youngest 3. Both had balance bikes and neither needed stabilisers

marypoppins2022 · 18/03/2022 21:26

I myself was 7. Very old but rode lots afterwards

Almost 10.
