20 Month Old Speech Delay?

Hello! I have a little boy who is going to be 20 months in a few days. I'm not sure if I am just worrying too much as I am a first time Mum and haven't done this before, but about a month or so ago a family member mentioned that my son "wasn't talking much for his age" and since then it has caused me to wonder whether I should be worried about his speech or not.

He can say "Mum" "Daddy" "Go go go!" "Yeah" and makes the "meow" sound when he sees a cat. He also mimics words every now and again but doesn't really ever repeat the words by himself. He is very vocal and is always talking in gibberish! I have noticed that he is talking in his own little language a lot more the past couple of weeks. I do flash cards with him often and he can associate objects with what I am showing him, he is just yet to say the words.

Communication and listening wise, he will point to something if he wants it, or grab our hands and take us to the front door if he wants to
go out, or the kitchen if he's hungry. If we ask him "where's the birdie?" Or "put it in the bin" he will listen and do the task/point or look at what we are talking about.

I have seen children his age that talk quite a bit, and as mentioned before I'm not sure if this is something I should be worried about where he is still quite young? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much. Smile

Just to add, he can do all the actions to baby shark, and he loves twinkle twinkle little star. He will do the star action with his hands and he sings along but it's more of a "do do do do" in the tune of "twinkle twinkle"Star

He sounds absolutely fine to me, please don't worry. My first son was talking in sentences by 18 months and by age 2, he was talking like an average 3 year old.
My second son came along and didn't say much at all. By 18 months he still hasn't said a single word, by 19 months he had one word (uh oh) which isn't really a word. I started to really get worried at this stage and honestly I spent months fretting over nothing.
He turned 2 last week and he is saying so many words now. I have so many friends who have experienced similar and where the words have taken even longer to come.
Your little one is already saying quite a few words. My advice would be to see a doctor to rule out any hearing issue (unlikely, but just in case)
And then just wait for the 2 year check. I bet you'll be amazed by how quickly he progresses when he is ready to do so Smile

@Henrysmum07 I know how you feel. I have a 25 month old dd who barely speaks while all her peers seem to be reciting Homer. I am also worried despite everyone trying to reassure me.
I think your little one seems fine to be honest. As the pp said, they do develop in sudden jumps not in a linear fashion.
The main thing is that he communicates and he does have words. The rest will come. If you're still worried though speak to you hv.

My dad was referred to slt and they assessed her and are not alarmed. She is speech delayed but has all the foundations for speech apparently and I think she is picking up more and more. She will also have a hearing test next week.

I am wondering how your little one is going with speech now? Sounds very similar to my DD now :)

@worriedmumma21 is very unlikely that the OP will see this thread now unless you @ them Wink

@Henrysmum07 I am wondering if you could please update this on how your little one is going now? My DD sounds similar and I was hoping to hear how things are going :)
