Hi my 2/12yo daughter has been waking in the night on a number of occasions and last night she was awakes from 11.50 pm to 5.30am wide awake and laughing, but crying when we tried to go back to bed. Can cough syrup been the cause of this?????

I'm grasping at straws at the minute.

Help needed.

Which one was it? My ds, 18 months, went hyper on Tixylix. It was the decongestant in it apparently.
We've been suffering with this waking up at night coughing for a while now - and it does seem to be getting better, slowly!

I've used tixylix and now we are using sudafed for children.

The decongestant in Tixylix is pseudoephidrine and for most people it causes drowsiness but our pharmacist said that in a few people it causes hyperactivity. Check your bottle - because it could be the medicine, although you may just have to ride out the cough! Boots sell a linctus which is really basic, honey and lemon but it does seem to help our little one (although he still seems to end up in our bed, wriggling around for hours and screaming if we put him back in his cot!)

Hmm This might explain some of my dd's strange sleep behaviour. Hadn't thought it might be the cough medicine she was taking at the time. Watching this thread to see if anyone else has had an odd experience. (It was tixylix in dd's case.)

Just been looking into all medicines I've given DD and its shocking how many E numbers, sugars, sweeteners and salt are in them.

She's going cold turkey from now on.

Apparently a spoonful of honey is more effective than over the counter cough mixtures for nightime coughing (recent study). We use it with our children (and ourselves).

Well no medicine last night and she was awake very hour until we finally brought her into our bed at 4.30am.

She would only go back to sleep if one of us stayed in her room. Any suggestions ladies please!!!!!!

All sounding horribly familiar! DS being v clingy at the mo - he wouldn't go to sleep last night at all as everytime we left his room he yelled (and then coughed..) He ended up sprawled between us til 1 when he so knackered he didn't even realise he'd been moved!
Tried giving honey a week or so ago. He is the boy that will eat anything sweet but seemed to sense he was being given honey for medicinal purposes and spat it out.
He's only had a short nap today so I'm hoping he's so tired tonight he'll just pass out. Otherwise I might be reaching for the calpol night

We agreed to try sleep training on Friday night, she went to bed no bother but woke at 9.20 and cried until 10.50 but after that she didn't wake until 8.00am.

Saturday night no bother, she went to bed okay and not a peep out of her.

Sunday night DP at football I think she senses only me in, from 7.00 until 8.00 she cried, she shouted she had a poorly cough, a tummy ache, a snotty nose, help me I can't get back into bed dad. But after all that she didn't wake until 7 this morning.

It's hard and I feel really cruel but its working so we will have to keep trying.

There is one ( maybe more ) in that some of the contents are well known for causing nightmares, so i wouldn't personally recommend them

Many medicines for kids affect my kids adversely. calpol gives middle son terrible insomnia and hyperactivity ( fun! ).
The best one is phenergan which made him almost hysterical. Brilliantly I had followed Dr's advice to give it to him to help him sleep on a long flight. When I stood up to get off every bugger on the plane was glaring at me

MuffinMclay · 07/01/2008 15:56

I'm convinced that Medised and cough mixtures (Boots and Benylin) make my ds hyper and impede his sleep.

mumsemily · 08/01/2008 11:56

Well last night surpassed itself, we put her in the bath as normal and as soon as I left the room to get todays things sorted she started crying. I eventually had to get her out and put her to bed early.

Once in bed she screamed the place down for 20 minutes before going to sleep, so I can't blame cough syrup anymore as she hasn't had any since Thursday. Can't help thinkine we have made things worse by trying sleep training or give it bit linger to try and sort her out as once asleep the last 4 nights she hasn't woke in the night.
