16 month old has 'lost' words

My son is coming up for 16 months and he still doesn't really say any words in my opinion.

He used to say mumma, dada, his name, hiya, two however in the past 1-2 months I'd say he's lost those words.

He babbles a lot and it is like he is having a chat with you but no coherent words.

He understands a lot. If I ask him to get me things or point to things he can.

Is this something I should be concerned about yet or will it come?

We read every day and he actively brings you books to read so he is interested.

He does a lot of gesturing for example if I say where is it? He puts out his hands out for don't know and makes sounds. If I say oh no he puts his hands on his cheeks as if he is shocked.

Following as my 15 month is the same. He never said as many words as your son but he did say a few which he has now lost. He does babble, gesture and communicate appropriately and his receptive language seems okay so I'm not worrying too much.

I'm guessing you're concerned about an ASD type regression? Doesn't sound like you should by the way just wondering as you can take the MCHAT screener at 16 months if you want reassurance.

He sounds fine. His social communication overall sounds well on track which is a good sign. I wouldn't worry too much about losing words at this stage and try not to 'make' him say them as he'll just resist. I'd be looking for a general upwards trend in number of words from 18MO onwards and a fair few words/hopefully sentences by 2. I'd also be looking for him to point by 18MO if he isn't already xx

@Jannt86 thanks for the reassurance.

He points at everything!

I'll keep an eye out around 18 months. He is definitely a more physically active child. Met or exceeded all his physical milestones on time or early so maybe he is just focusing on those just now.

@Foreverbaffled yes concerned about ASD.

Just a few other behaviours he has too which I don't know if they early asd signs or just not a development.

But I know language developments is one.

It's so worrying thinking about their development!!
I have a 16 month old who says a few words. I decided to stop googling things as it stressed me out too much.
If she is not saying more by 18 months I will contact the health visitor.
