15 month old dd not walking alone yet

My 15 month old dd has been cruising very expertly for 4 months now. She also walks holding onto 1 hand. She very very occassionally stands unsupported for a fraction of a second. However she doesn't seem to be making any progress to walking.

She met all her other milestones earlyish and learnt to crawl in 2 weeks at 8 months old.

I know some kids don't walk til later than this but this just doesn't seem right for her and I'm wondering if somethings knocked her confidence.

What do I do? Just leave her to walk when she's ready or try to gently encourage her? I don't want to rush her into anything in case it frightens her.

Advice and reassurance needed please!

Leave her be, she'll do it when she's ready. crawlers are often late walkers - they can already get around.

I wouldn't worry until at least March or April.

peacelily · 01/01/2008 15:47

I had thought that as she's so fast at crawling that might be it too, she doesn't really need to walk. My Mum says I walked at 1 but never really crawled because i couldn't do it!

im sure everything is fine loads of babies dont walk till much older than this!
of course you can encourage her, just dont be forceful of get upset, she will be fine
like you say, dont rush her, just gentle ecnouragement.
my dd was about 15 months old too before she took her first steps, but once she did get the hang of it she was off.
once she gets started, you wont remember what all your worry was about, and you will wish she didnt walk at all!!!

peacelily · 01/01/2008 15:51

she's also VERY chatty constatntly singing and babbling to herself trying to copy what we say. I had heard from other Mums that "talkers" are soetimes late walkers.

Just getting a bit sick of "oh isn't she walking yet?" from everyone. She looks a lot older than 15m too because she's tall with lots of hair.

Agree with Colditz. DS1 didn't bother crawling, he just cruised everywhere from 8m then at 11m let go of the furniture and walked really well from day 1. DS2 crawled really fast and didn't bother cruising. He walked at 15m.

Is she your first, I must admit to smiling a bit that you think her not being advanced with walking is 'doesn't seem right for her' why? are your friends children walking earlier and you like your dd to be first at everything

Kbear · 01/01/2008 15:53

Don't worry, she'll get there. My two were very different, one walked at 9 months one at 15 months!

lizandlulu · 01/01/2008 15:53

yes i get alot of that too. my dd is also tall with loads of hair, but cant speak very well. just this last week she has started trying to copy what we say. before that she was limited to around 10 words.
on sunday she said 'bubble bath'!! you should have heard our whoops!!! it was so so cute

peacelily · 01/01/2008 15:54

I sppose it's just because she sta up rolled over etc quite early and was very confident. I'm not bothered when she does things as long as she's happy and healthy, was more concerned that something may have knocked her confidence TBH. I'm the opposite of a pushy person!

I think that many children do learn either talking or walking first and the other follows when they're ready.

My DDs walked at 16 & 18 months but they were both talking in sentences by then with huge understanding of concepts etc. DS in contrast, walked at 11 months but had very few words until he was 18 months +.

Your DD is clearly able to support her weight so I'd give her another couple of months before seeking professional opinions.

dd666 · 01/01/2008 15:57

dont worry about it she will do it in her own time!
dd was 10mo walking round furniture
was 11mo crawling
13mo walking independently.
and i dont think the walking talking thing is connected more of a myth i think as dd chatters really well and clearly!

My ds suddenly got up and walked across the room at 17.5 months. He didn't do it again for another three or 4 days but then just walked all the time very confidently.

He sat, crawled and cruised at 'average' time before that.

My dd walked at 13 months but was rather wobbly and had various accidents over the months.

TheIceQueen · 01/01/2008 16:13

DS1 was a non-crawling, 6 months long cruising furntiture baby - when he finally walked alone he was 18 months old!......and he didn't really talk until he was nearly 2yrs old!

TwoToTango · 01/01/2008 16:19

My DS didn't crawl until 8.5 months, didnt cruise and was walking just before 10 months. My friends DS crawled from 6 months but didn't walk until 17.5 months.

fizzbuzz · 01/01/2008 17:02

My dd is 18 months old. She can walk, but prefers to crawl, or knee walk. She's got really rough little knees with loads of hard skin on them

She didn't even stand alone until 16 months

katylou25 · 01/01/2008 17:21

My Ds1 was like this - he crawled from a very early age - 5 months - cruised at 8 months - and just kept cruising and cruising as everyone said hell be walking soon! - Finally walked at 17 months. DS2 on the other hand hardly cruised at all just got up one day at 10.5 months and walked down the garden as I sat there in shock!

TheIceQueen · 01/01/2008 19:02

DS1 was totally different, he crawled at 7 months, was found on his way upstairs at 7 1/2 months and was walking well by 10 months!!!

Don't think DS3 is going to be quite that quick......he's only just (on Boxing Day) at just 7 months old, mastered the art of sitting up unaided LOL.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/01/2008 19:03

My fourteen month old is exactly the same - Speedy Gonzales on all fours, can stand perfectly well and can stoop down too so I know she has balance, but she just doesn't fancy walking yet - ce la vie! Could really do with her learning though, I'm pregnant and she's heavy!

ceebee74 · 01/01/2008 19:07

My DS was an early 'crawler' (when I say crawling, it was of the commando variety ) at 7 months, learnt to crawl properly at 11 months - but didn't start walking properly/confidently until 14 months - despite being an early crawler/mover.

Be patient - he will get there in his own time

neasels · 01/01/2008 19:14

Hi

My DS wasn't walking until he was 19/20 months and I was 8 months pregnant and getting quiet concerned about how I would carry 2 kids!!!

He got there really quickly and was running in a couple of weeks. He continues to be a really strong walker and enjoys it.

Don't worry, they all go when the time is right xx

peacelily · 01/01/2008 20:23

Hi thanks everyone for all the comments just needed to ease my anxieties. Just got back from a restaurant trip and she managed to scoot around everywhere very proficciently (sp?) using the furniture walls etc getting herself into the usual mischief!! She's now taken to using adult size chairs as a walker!!

Comments v helpful cheers xx

I've got one here as well My ds is now 15 months and not walking - seems very content with cruising and then shuffling on his knees.. My dd walked at 11 months.

I think that there is something in the crawling thing - ds is really quick at crawling and dd never really got the hang of it..

callmeovercautious · 01/01/2008 20:34

Hi Peacelily. My DD is the same age and sounds exactly the same. My Mum says I was the same too. I know she can walk unaided as she does the odd step or two but only when she kind of forgets herself. It as if she takes after me and is cautious She is very stable on her feet and I am hoping that when she does decide to let go that she will fall less than her friends who walked much earlier.

I think you are right about the confidence thing, I do notice she worries about falling a lot but I think it is because she has not had many tumbles iyswim? Whereas friends LOs who threw themselves around without a care in the world walked much earlier.

peacelily · 01/01/2008 20:42

Yes dd v cautious too, doesn't really tumble about much very aware of the stairs and heights etc. Just like me.
