Wierd head shaking behaviour in 6 month old

My 6 1/2 month old DD has developed a wierd head shaking habit!
She shakes her head from side to side quite vigorously (I'm sure it must make her dizzy) over and over. It's definitely deliberate and she seems to do it when she's excited / happy with a big smile on her face.
She's been doing it since she was about 5 months old.

She does it a lot though!
For instance today we were in a cafe and she was sat on my knee looking at everyone, grinning like a cheshire cat and shaking her head over and over. People kept laughing at her (in a nice way).
I'm not too worried about it, but should I be?
Is this normal baby behaviour? No other baby I know has done this.
Why does she do it?

Have you had her checked for an ear infection?

belgo · 31/12/2007 19:08

although if she does it when she's happy, presumably it's not an infection

PeppermintPatty · 31/12/2007 19:16

No I have not had her checked for ear infection - do you think I should?
She doesn't seem ill or in pain or anything.

My DD did that too! Except she seemed to do it only in her carseat... I thought the same thing, what a strange habit, but she stopped doing it eventually. (She did it around the same age) I'm not sure but I had a feeling she was just experimenting w/ feeling the texture of the carseat on her head. Sometimes she did it in the pram too, which has the same textured fabric as the seat. So maybe your DD has figured out that it's fun to shake her head? I remember I used to spin around and around until I was dizzy as a little kid- maybe she just likes the sensation?

Gecko did that at about that age

ALOT and I was beggining to think someting was wrong but she just stopped doing it and never seemed ill

I thought maybe teeth making her ears feel funny or a cold doing the same thing

or maybe she just learnt to do it and liked it

PeppermintPatty · 31/12/2007 19:45

Yes, I get the impression it's either a habit she's got into or she does it for fun / out of excitement.
It seems a strange thing to do and I did wonder if it was 'normal' behaviour, but if your LO's did this too maybe it is

Another one doing it here, PP - seems to be a trend

PeppermintPatty · 31/12/2007 19:54

Oooo didn't see that one WW - seems like it's not just my LO then!

my 6.5 month old does it too!
I think just because he can....
he also sticks tongue out a lot, blows raspberries, tries to suck his toes.
i figure they all just his way of learning about his body and what it can do?
oh and tries to grab or touch EVERYTHING

evenhope · 05/01/2008 10:44

My 9 mo DD does this too- started at about 6 months. As I type she is "singing" to a mobile phone while rocking backwards and forwards shaking her head, occasionally stopping to clap. I think she's happy

Sushipaws · 05/01/2008 15:06

My DD started doing this at around 5 months too, I asked the doctor and my hv and they both said it's just a developmental thing. She used to do it in her pram when people smiled at her, they soon stopped smiling as it can look alarming.

She's 9 months now and still occationally does it but not very often.

My 6 1/2 month old does that too! I just discovered it 2 days ago. It's quite scary. I thought it was some kind of tourretes syndrome! She shakes her head when she's singing and happy and when she throws a tantrum while lying down and wants to be carried. I think it's her way of venting. Anyway hope it stops soon cos it's starting to freak us out

my dd did it in her highchair and also encouraged her friends to do it too. it was very funny.
