Toddler focus

my toddler seems very aware of his surroundings. For example when we went to swimming classes he would be fascinated by the guy sweeping up at the side of the pool rather than what was going on in this lesson.
Is this something I should be concerned about?

How old is he?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 06/02/2022 15:38

20 months - has always been like this though

My little one was like this as well. I'm 100% certain it's not asd but there is something there which I can't work out or put a finger on. Always on the go, short attention span, would focus on something else rather than the actual activity, extremely alert. Baby classes were a nightmare as he preferred doing everything apart from the activity. I'm responding so it can bump your thread and someone who is more knowledgeable can hopefully answer you.

I am interested on replies from this as my little one can be like this, is more bothered about how his flashcards can all fall on the floor and spin when he throws them rather than actually looking at them.
My son has just turned 17 months.
Is there any other concerns for you?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 06/02/2022 20:11

Yes he is always on the go too. Although he will sit and read a book now but he’s not interested in other quieter activities like crayons etc. But as I said he will sit and let me read to him. Enjoys certain tv shows so will sit for them.

Baby classes it’s very dependent on the activity. He does like Gymboree as it’s mostly physical type free play. Swimming classes were just not for him though there was too much going on for him to actually enjoy it if that makes sense.

Other concerns are that he is very sensitive to sounds. When he was younger he would touch his ear to his shoulder almost like a tick if he heard low rumbling sounds eg kettle, traffic etc even though he was used to hearing these sounds all the time. Has grown out of doing that but still loses it over certain sounds eg someone was cutting down a tree the other day and he was distraught.

But also think these things are pretty common in
Small children

My little one wasn't keen on some noises and still is a bit frightened sometimes at certain things.
How are they with responding to their name and instructions?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 06/02/2022 21:03

So he will respond to his name, follows instructions sometimes!

My one hated the hairdryer and the inflatable bed blowing and would cry but now is ok with it even though I use it only once in a while but was ok with everyday sound although dc did go through some phase with holding her ears for a month or so if she heard a hoover or siren just around your ds's age. Dc started following instructions from about 20 months, just the basics like bathtime, bring me your shoes, brush your teeth. How's yours with instructions? Also when did he start pointing? I'm hoping @AladdinMum can see this thread as she has great knowledge and would be very interested in what she says. Following with interest.

M0m23 · 06/02/2022 21:11

My little one can understand some instructions such as bath time, dinner time, find a certain toy etc.
But he doesn't respond to his name.
I just wondered if anyone had this problem with their LO?
He also does what the post was about too.
Which is why I fear he could have ASD

IDontLikeMondays88 · 09/03/2022 20:55

Just bumping this one.

Took my LO to the hairdresser at the weekend and it was an absolute nightmare. He screamed his head off and was trying to jump out my lap. He wasn’t in the least distracted by cartoons on my phone etc, he was far too aware of the barber.

Meanwhile other people who have toddlers the same age - their toddlers have been fine 😩😩😩

Not sure if I am making something out of nothing and this is just a personality thing/ quite common in little kids
