When and how did you start potty training ?

My DD has just turned two. I keep getting pressure from my extended family that I need to get going already. I've put her on the potty a few times and also on the toilet with the little seat.

But she cries. I've done it a couple of times while I noticed she was doing a poo in her nappy, so I quickly took it off and put her on the toilet.

It did not go down well and she had a melt down. Poor thing.

How do I even start ?? ?

Apparently I was completely potty trained by 18 months and so were all my siblings and cousins.

I didn't potty train as such but there came a point when my son knew when he wanted to go, woke up in the morning dry, and I suggested he do a 'grown up' wee (like mummy and daddy did), in his pot. He was coming up to two and I remember at his second birthday party he had no nappy, came up to me and asked me to take his trousers off so he could go to the toilet. He was well rewarded and never looked back but I was laid back about it all.

Take no notice of well meaning relations, every child is different. Many children are extremely stressed at pressure being put on them to use pot/toilet. They'll get there in the end.

Yeah my daughter has never ever done anything like this ! She occasionally tells me she's done a poo, but that's about it..

They need to develop an awareness they have weed (not just pooed) before they're ready. I noticed with my son that he started pausing and concentrating and then I asked him what was going on he said "done a wee wee", this was just before he turned two but followed lots of talking about the toilets and that's where we do wees and poos and letting him come with us when we needed to go. Then we followed the oh crap method. Naked waist down for the first couple of days, get them used to the feeling and signals they need to go, lots of praise when they do a wee or poo on the potty, get them to help flush it away afterwards etc. Gradually progress to commando then pants. He still needs reminding to go sometimes but generally he's very good

We followed the oh crap method and she cracked it with ease a few days after turning 2. Going bare from the waist down definitely helped I think. My advice as per the oh crap method would be to watch for the signs she's ready then once you commit to it then really commit and don't be namby pamby about it tell her that it's what you're doing. There is a potty training section of mn that you might get more response on btw. Good luck xx

@Inthesky42 what age was your son? My 19 month old has started doing this and I have debated with myself whether to start trying him.
