5 month old head lag during pull to sit

Hi all - I'm really worried about my 5 month old. She has always had a delay in head control and though now she is able to hold her head up during tummy time (by putting weight on her arms) and stays horizontal without support when I carry (albeit for a few minutes) she has quite a bit of a head lag during the pull to sit maneuver. Her head flops back quite badly.

I did some Googling (I know I shouldn't!) and CP and autism came up! I'm so worried now!

In terms of her other development, she does seem quite active - when on her matt she aways has her legs in the air kicking, she has rolled both sides but only a couple of times, tracks, smiles and coos. She can't really sit. Her new thing is putting her feet in her mouth!

Has anyone else's little one had a head lag during pull to sit at 5 months? Do you think this is something to be concerned about? I have a referral which it taking ages!

Thanks

Hi, I remember worrying about this when my son was younger and doing a lot of googling- I’m not 100% sure but seem to remember head lag after six months being the concern? So it’s still early for your little one. I also remember my son losing head lag very suddenly - as in one day he had head lag, the next day he didn’t. I know it’s hard not to worry ( I worried a lot with both mine!) but it might be a bit early and just need to keep an eye on things to see if it improves. Sorry not much help!

I'm so sorry you're in this horrible place. DS2 is under neurology and we were told that head lag is only considered an issue after 6 months. When you do pull to sit make sure you're 'warning' them it's coming by gently (obviously really gently) giving their arms a tug and then they can brace before you pull (think we'd all have head lag if we didn't know what was coming!)

Thank you both! @Foreverbaffled - if you don't mind me asking - does your DS2 have any other symtoms or is he being investigated for the head lag alone? X

I don't mind at all. So DS2 actually never had an issue with head lag (it had gone by 5 months) but he did have some other big red flags for cerebral palsy including sustained ankle clonus and intermittent high tone in his legs. We have a fab consultant neurologist though who talked me through a lot of things. Head lag after 6 months can be a sign of hypotonia which in itself can end up being totally benign. It can also be a sign of other things. I would see how things go over the next month Smile
