Baby cries during and after feeding

My baby is 5 1/2 weeks now and for the last week or two I've been having problems with feeding him. I think I've sussed what kind of cry means that he is hungry initially and he seems to latch on ok. He will then often feed for between 5 and 10 minutes continuously and then slow down taking a few sucks now and then. When he comes off this is where the trouble begins. I try to sit him up to burp him and he often starts crying and resisting me by pushing backwards. The only way I can settle him a little is up on my shoulder but he will eventually start crying again. I will then try him with more food. He then has a period of half sucking and feeding then coming off and crying often being a little sick. I usually manage to get him to burp a few times but he never seems satisfied and happy. Any tips or ideas?

Thrush? This can make feeding sore for the baby. You'll know if he (and you) have thrush as he'll have white spots inside his mouth which don't come off when rubbed.

If this is the case you'll need to treat your nipples and his mouth until it's all gone.

hi there, I had the same problem with my son when breastfeeding. It is true most baby need less burping when breastfeeding as they take in less air. BUT my son had terrible wind when I breastfed. I persisted for 5 months knowing it was best for him in the long term but the crying during and after a feed really got to me. i found it wasnt so much wind from the mouth as wind from the bottom! breast milk gave him terrible wind in that direction. I tried changing my diet and ate bland foods etc. Eventually it got to a stage where I had to leave him to go out and I left him formula that dat (he had drunk expressed milk from a bottle before this and was used to a bottle) and he had a much more settled tummy with it, so I bit the bullet and transitioned from breast to bottle. I would def say speak to your midwife or health visitor before doing anything, I certainly did. Breast is definatly beast and well done for doing it. Plus he is still learning, give it time. My son loved being on my shoulder too. At 8 weeks he was sleeping through the night, they say breast feed on demand, and i did, my sone set his own routine, maybe your little boy will settle into one too. Good luck, and remember to ask your HV for help, give them a call, its what they are there for
