1 year old won't drink much water?

My LO has just turned 1 and he was on 3 bottles of formula a day but I've just cut this to 2. Trying to get him on cows milk but he's had a bad reaction to it so formula it is for now. Although not relevant really.

The problem is he drinks hardly any water all day?! It's always been offered at meals since 6 months, and now I leave it out during the day so it's always available. The only cup he likes is a straw cup (we've tried many different types). But he will literally have a few sips throughout the day and has hardly anything overall! He's becoming a bit constipated as well, I guess as he's having more solids and less liquids.

Any tips to get him to drink more? I don't want him to get dehydrated!

What kind of snacks and meals does he have?

Could you serve food with lots of liquid like grapes and porridge ?

BunnyRuddington · 24/01/2022 16:18

He's having roughly 90 ml over the required amount of milk so that's some extra fluid.

Have you tried him with some diluted fruit juice once a day.

Like cherry suggests, water rich foods are always useful. Things like broccoli, cauliflower, melon, soup, jelly, homemade ice lollies and strawberries are all water rich.

He has porridge some days for breakfast so that's some more water. I hadn't thought about food.

He loves fruit like raspberries/strawberries/peach/banana etc

This is more of a summer thing perhaps but you could try freezing some pieces of chopped fruit in a little bit of water in an ice cube tray. Just make sure the result isn't too big to choke on and be easily chewed - definitely not whole ice cube size. You can always leave them to defrost a bit if you're not sure.
