Hi guys I’m interested to hear about your thoughts on toddler understanding. I'm trying to figure out if my little ones lack of understanding is abnormal or just a little delay. On the whole he’s pretty smart he knows all of his colours, can sing parts of nursery rhymes and can even count to 10 at only 25 months! but his actual listening to commands and understanding what we say is very limited. His whole personal and social communication seems to be quite off track.. he also has quite a sensory issues when it comes to food he is beyond fussy and refuses anything on a spoon or fork. any comments welcome:)

How limited? Can he understand a one-step command, two-step command?
How is his general speech, stringing sentences together, requesting things he wants (either using words or gestures)?
Does he seem interested in other kids (watch them, talk to them, copy them?)

So when I say shoes or socks he knows what they are and can identify them but if I was to say go and get your shoes or go and get your socks he wouldn't quite understand what to do. Again he knows what food is and drinks but if I was to say Noah do you want some food or are you hungry there is no response. He has words but no sentences or a few word responses other than singing songs. His response to names is also limited rarely he will look but 90% of the time won't.

I would write everything down in bullet point form and speak to your GP or a HV.
A delay and a disorder can look the same, but the delay eventually tends to correct itself. It won’t do him any harm to get a professional opinion, and if he grows out of it in the meantime, great!

Definitely write it down and speak to your GP as suggested. They should refer you for a hearing test abs SLT ideally.

Before you do go, I'd do the 24 month progress checker from ICan and also the MChat Test, just to see what his risk of ASD might be Smile

@katerosexox how is your little one now? My 2 year old sounds similar.
