5 year old getting words mixed up

I’ve noticed since my DS could start talking he gets certain words mixed up. He frequently will use the antonym of the word he wants, so will say easy instead of hard, inside instead of outside, up instead of down etc and vice versa. He’s definitely not doing it on purpose, he just genuinely gets it mixed up.
Is that something a lot of kids do?

Personally I'd ask for a referral to SLT for that one. My DD mixed up certain sounds and SLT quickly sorted it.

Thank you - I sort of assumed this was something fairly normal he’d grow out of, and so SLT didn’t occur to me. I’ll look into that!

I think it's definitely worth getting him assessed, even if it's just for reassurance Smile

So, he's had his first assessment from the speech pathologist and there's actually some serious concerns.
He's also been acting out in school and now is on the pathway for a lot of different assessments. I can't believe I didn't pick up on this earlier

Hi, just wondering what the outcome was? My son is already under SLT but we've noticed he always gets mixed up with things.. I will mention it next time he has a review but that's not for a while! Thanks

What kind of serious concerns?

DropYourSword · 20/04/2022 10:31

Hi @anexhaustedmum (sorry this thread fell off my "active" but the new mumsnet interface shows all the threads I've started!)
So I've been on quite the ride since this post. He has been diagnosed as having developmental language disorder- as soon as I saw him being assessed I realised his issues were much bigger than I initially anticipated. He is also in the middle of being assessed for ASD and ADHD which seems to be pretty much a given that he be diagnosed with.

Thank you for the reply! My son was diagnosed with ADHD beginning of the year, he does show some ASD traits but hasn't been referred for an assessment. We wondered whether it was his brain struggling to focus and retain words which is why they were always mixed up, no matter how many times we would correct him it would still be wrong 🙈 he doesn't have very good short term memory either so maybe this contributes with speech/ADHD too.

Good luck with your ADHD/ASD journey, it's so tough and draining but will be worth it 🤞🏼
